Our 15th
Wedding Anniversary
Today is our 15th Wedding anniversary, who thought that we
will be celebrating it here in this beautiful spot… Sleeping in and then a
wonderful breakfast and then we start the day and on the way to the Falls we
stopped at the Mining museum to check out the huge truck… only now it is inside
the museum, so we couldn’t see it too close….
Shannon Falls
Today we wanted to visit the Shannon Falls – ok the drive is short the
wait at the parking lot long and luckily for us, someone at the big corner
parking space left and we could sneak in…
Guess it is quite touristy here – so we went to the first viewing
platform… and then up to the upper one, and see there as where in the good old
days we could walk all the way over the falls and climb around between the
rocks… no more!!! So that means we look and then go back…
The legend of the serpent:
- they say here was once a huge two-headed serpent: Sinulhkay who tormented the Squamish people. By the way the black stripes on the Stawamus Chief are from the serpent.
- Xwechtal the son of a great Chief, had a vision to cleanse himself in the sacred waters of Stakw (Shannon Falls) - it was here that he killed the serpent. He took one of the bones which had the magical power to kill and revive human lifes. To celebrate it he got a wife from each tribe united the Squamish Nation.
Murin PP
Yesterday we discovered that the lake is right at the highway… but
because we have a lot of time, we decided to stop and check it out. And lucky
for us, there was a super duper RV parking spot right for us! Out we went and
over to the lake: ok that didn’t totally sparkled our mind, with picnic benches
and a not to clean lake with a lot of people… I don’t know what they all see in
that lake….
But there is a short hike (only Gine doesn’t know how long) up to a
viewpoint over Howe sound… so Paul wanted to relax in the sun at the lake and
then Gine went on: the loop trail starting out and going quite up on rocks
sometimes nearly to difficult to see where it goes… that means a good workout
and always along the bluffs and huge bolders. Up on the first viewpoint on a
bluff with a cool little bench: and an amazing view on Howe sound and by the
way it is extremely hot!!!! Then it goes down and up and there is the next view
point and again a cute little bench and an amazing view… and from here as steep
as it went up it goes down with steps not made for short people!! But it was
fun going along the bolders and rocks…. 45 Min later Gine needs a drink and is
back with Paul!! Time to head
Back at Porteau Cove
Jump in the ocean for a cool down… and we took again our air matresses
out because it is so nice to gently rock on the cold water and we followed the
water down to the nice beach at the walk-in sites… that’s where Paul get’s
dropped off for a beach relaxing time and Gine paddles again around the corner
into he little cove and comes back to relax with Paul… and because the tide is
coming in, soon we are floating again….
We had 2 coffee’s
Coming back from our little trip we had coffee and tropical fruit salad
and after coming back from our paddle trip we had coffee and ice cream… but
then it is a special day today right!!!
Our last evening
And for a real special evening tonight we had a few clouds – so that we
can see the yellow-orange and reddish colors of the sunset over Howe sound… It
is truly an amazing place and we can be so thankful to be here….
A long way home
Breakfast earlier than normally on a last day of camping, because today
we have to go to the ferry!!! But first we emptied the gray and black water… and decided it is really
time for a new toilet!!! There is some seal that is not working proper – and we
can smell it.
At 10 am we are on the way to the Ferry… buy our ticket… and yes there
was no more space on the 11.15 ferry. After parking in line we went over to horseshoe bay park, walk out on
the dock, enjoy the hot sunshine and the chairs… and then head back to the
ferry.
What more can you ask for: blue sky and warm weather when on the ferry…
ok the wind!! As always we enjoy the view when leaving the coastal mountains
and also when coming to Nanaimo – it is such a beautiful coastline… and we
never get tired off it.
Driving back with a quick stop to pick up the new toilet and refilling
gas so we are ready for the next camping trip – unloading and see there it is
already 5.30 pm… and the whole day is over.
And another amazing Camping trip came to an end!!
