High Humidity

La Peñita de Jaltomba, Nayarit, Mexico

Left at 0620 this morning to walk the beach at La Colonia. Humidity was very high: 84%, 85º, 102 HI. I was dripping sweat after five minutes. It was overcast and not too good for sunrise pics.

The beach has about 10 feet of soft sand, then a steep drop of about 15 feet down to the surf which comes crashing in: you can't swim there. The beach is around 3 miles long, but you can't walk on the steep hardpacked sand; you have to walk in the soft sand at the top: really takes it out of you in high humidity. I walked about a mile and called it quits! My shirt, front and back, was soaked.

Luckily there was a cab nearby and I got a ride into La Peñita. Thursday mornings is market day here, and I hadn't been yet (not really needing to buy anything.) Seeing as how I'm leaving soon, I figured I'd check it out. Stalls around the town square and down one long street off of the square. The same as the other markets I've seen: pretty much any small item you might need is available here at a decent price. For $0.60 I got a 14 oz drink of some kind of watered down milky substance that tasted pretty good.

Went back up the main street and picked up a few groceries. It was about 8:30 when I got back. Seemed a lot later than that. I took off my hot, wet clothes, put on my shorts, and sat on the couch with the fan in front of me. I was beat; didn't even want to jump in the shower to cool off. Sitting and reading with the fan on me did the trick, as my body recovered from my morning ordeal.

Lunch? Chips and lemonade.

Read all afternoon, with some mini naps. I'd been thinking about dinner, and I really didn't want ham and cheese again; I really wanted to go out and have a decent meal, especially as it has been a while since I've done that.

I decided to wait until after (the lousy) sunset; then I headed into town.

There are several restaurants around the beach area and, after checking out a couple of them, I chose what I expected to be the most expensive one.

Las Brisas is an upstairs restaurant, on a corner, with one side facing the ocean. When I was walking around looking at the other restaurants, the air was totally dead and the humidity still very high. When I walked into the dining room, I felt a cooling breeze; I looked around for a fan, but couldn't find one; so I just walked into the breeze toward a table (seat yourself). Went up to a table overlooking the surf: the breeze was coming from the ocean! Every bench on the boardwalk was occupied: the only air available in town! When I hit the street after dinner I really felt it, after being in the breeze for two hours.

I ordered a margarita: I didn't like the flavor; don't know if it was the mix or the tequila, but it didn't suit me. Drank it though. The entree was their most expensive: the Seafood Fest - mahi, shrimp, octopus and scallops ($9.75).
The mahi was the worst I've ever had and the shrimp were tough; everything else was good. Total: $14. And I have lunch for tomorrow (couldn't eat it all).

Got home about 9:00. Started reading. Rain began at about 9:45. It was off and on for several hours, during which time I went to bed.
