From Huatulco to Oaxaca

Oaxaca, Oaxaca, Mexico

Grabbed a cab at 8:45 for my 9:30 bus. Bus was 15 min late.

Went up, down, and around hills.

Got stopped by State Police for inspection. We all got off; then they went through the stuff we had in the bus, but didn't mess with the stuff underneath. Took about 15 min.

About noon, we got into Salina Cruz, a good sized port city, whose good days are behind it. Unloaded a few, took on a bunch.

On the way into Salina Cruz, I saw that it wasn't in good shape: rusted ironwork, poor cement work, lots of unfinished buildings.

The playground needed weeding and some TLC.           Lots of old buses.

Not someplace you want to visit unless you really have a need to be there. One hour away from there we went through Tehuantepec: much nicer town; I might even want to hang around there.

And 45 min later we stopped for a 30 min break. This place had four or five separate dining areas, even some outside tables, and hammocks! You could really rest up in this rest stop!

The menu was limited but it was stuff they could make up pretty quick: they have to feed 40 people in 15 min, giving you another 15 to eat and get back on the bus.

Didn't know what I was ordering, but got a pork sandwich, so that was okay. Didn't like the papaya water.

We weren't that quick, so now we're about 35 min behind schedule.

Went up into the mountains: great views - from the other side of the bus!

We kind of wound our way around this one side of this valley, and when I realized we were going up the other side, I tried to get some shots of the road we'd been on. They didn't turn out too well.

Did a little better on the sunset photos, but I think the tint in the bus window messed up the colors.

Coming out of the mountains, I thought I'd lost my shot at the sunset, so I took this one and a couple others.

And as we came around some more mountains, this showed up

Never did see the sun actually set.

Rolled into Oaxaca, and I thought about trying my night setting.

Not bad.

After getting of the bus, I went across the street to the hotel: they wanted $30. I went walking around: saw another at that price; saw a couple more I didn't think I'd like. Went back to the first one.

I was hungry again, so I went looking for a restaurant.
What's the first thing I see? Golden Arches. No thanks. Done that plenty of times in the past.

So I went around a couple blocks: saw nothing. Checked my phone map: something about six blocks away. Okay, I started walking that way, and found myself looking down a rather long hill, that I would have to climb back up. You know what? All I really want is a bite to eat - nothing special. McD's will do. I walked over there, looked through the windows at other people's food (because I read that some places don't serve quite the same things the same way we're used to), but I didn't see anything 'off'. So I went in and got the doublecheese burger with fries and drink special - $3. Tasted exactly like what I'm used to, and hit the spot too.

Went back to my room. The internet wasn't good enough to do anything. Watched MNF. Went to sleep.
