Town runaround

Oaxaca, Oaxaca, Mexico

Not getting any sunrise or sunset photos: I'm on the north face of this small mountain; both the east and west views are blocked by trees and houses; the west view is also blocked by the top of the mountain.

Had a couple of errands to run in town. Headed out about 8am. Went back down to the Zócalo to get some tourist info: no tourist info booth where it was supposed to be. Walked around looking for a place to do a fax: nobody does faxes anymore. But, in order to be able to do draw money from one of my retirement accounts, they insist on faxing the paperwork (they say it's more secure). Didn't find a fax place, but did run into a tourist info booth at a different spot.

In the crowded downtown area, there was probably the smallest Burger King I've ever seen. Also found out the name of that church: Jesuit Temple; didn't know Jesuits had temples; but some of the other Catholic churches here are also called temples.

Next, I hopped on a bus to Soriana (like Wal-Mart). It was headed in the wrong direction, but these are one-way streets, so I figured he make a turnaround. I figured wrong! I wanted to go north, he kept going southwest. Turns out there's a Soriana out that way, but I never did see it. Ended up at the top of a big hill: end of route! I showed the bus driver, on my phone map, where I wanted to go: he said that's where he was going next, after they cleaned the bus.

At least I got good views of the city from a different angle.

Got a drink at a shop nearby. After 30 minutes, the bus took off. Now we had to make our way all the way through town. That took a while. Did my shopping. The bus stop I got off at doesn't have a bus going by to take me where I'm staying. As one of the bus drivers is telling me this, a lady comes up to me and tells me I have to go four blocks west. Finally got the right bus and made it back - at about 3pm!

I looked through the travel brochures I'd picked up, then at 5pm I walked up the hill again: got pics this time, but I'm not happy with them; so I'll probably try again tomorrow. I found (so far) there are three roads up this mountain, as they split off; so, a lot more climbing ahead for me; that's okay, I can use the exercise.

When I went to order dinner, I spotted a new guest: I went up to this gal and asked her to join me for dinner, but she and her sister were headed to see a doctor. I left it at that. Saw them heading out while I was eating.

Dinner tonight was a thin pork chop, covered with some kind of sauce (very informative, aren't I; I don't understand enough to know what they are telling me) and a vegetable (some kind of squash, I think). The soup had celery in it also. The cook showed me the fruit she used to make the drink, but I didn't catch the name of it, but this is the one I like best so far: tasted a little like grape. Just remembered last night's drink: made from oatmeal! Add some other stuff to it, put it in a blender with water, and voilá: oatmeal milk, sort of. Anyway, everything they've been giving me is healthy, because this is what they eat, and a couple of them are overweight, so they are trying to eat right. Also, they feel that serving healthy traditional mexican fare will be appreciated by their guests. Works for me, as long as it tastes good!

Came back to my room, read for a little while, went back to the dining area for a coke and saw the two girls having their dinner. Came back, read a little more and fell asleep. Woke up after a couple hours and worked on this blog. Now it's back to bed.
