Oaxaca market day

Oaxaca, Oaxaca, Mexico

It was cold this morning, so I stayed in bed all bundled up and did more research on sights to see.

About three hours later, I decided it was time to hit the road. I showered, got dressed, and went out into the warm sunshine. That's the problem with being on the northern slope: no sunshine - at all.

Went up to the owners house: two were bundled up on the sofa, two more on the love seat, in the sunshine - that part of the house faces south!

Talked to Julie for a minute, then headed out to Central de Abastos (supplies). While not generally listed as one of the markets in Oaxaca, it nonetheless is a large labyrinth of 'stuff': mostly everyday supplies, mostly grouped by category, such as clothes, meat, vegetables, Christmas decorations, music cd's and instruments, etc. It's a real warren of shops, food stands, sights, and smells (only the fish area was a little heavy - but it was right next to the flowers, so I guess that helped; wonder what the flowers smell like when you get them home!)

I didn't buy anything there, except for lunch: a couple of empanadas with mystery (to me) stuffing.

I mostly walked around lost (it's about 20 acres).

As you can see, the buses are not uniform: different models with different paint jobs. The names on the front window tell you the general areas they go to.

Going into town, I was looking for 'Abastos', but what I needed was 'Central'. There are buses with 'Centro' (downtown), and some with both. After letting a half dozen buses with 'Central' go by ( there are buses every couple minutes), I asked the next one if it went to Abastos and the driver said yes.

On the way back, from downtown you can catch a 'San Felipe' bus; again I asked a couple of drivers about the San Felipe bus (there are four different places at 'Central' where you wait for whatever bus you want), and they pointed me to the right area. I also asked if it said 'San Felipe' in the window, and they said yes. I looked for about 50 minutes: no San Felipe. I kept seeing Normal and Volcanes, which I had to take to return from Soriana (which is in the northeast; I'm in the southwest), so I hopped on the next one, and it brought me right where I wanted to be.

So I got back around 6pm, and went to my room to work on the blog. After a couple hours, I went up to see if the bar was open. It was not, even though this place is now half full. Maybe next weekend.

So I came back, blogged and read and went to sleep.
