School & trip

Quetzaltenango, Quetzaltenango, Guatemala
School is getting better: I'm finally able to complete sentences, but not always with correct endings. After only one week, that's not so bad. My teacher has a plan, I think, to teach me a certain number of nouns and words each day. Don't if the school demands this or this is her way of teaching, but I'm having a hard time remembering everything.

At about 3pm, 7 students and a guide from the school got on a bus to Salcajá, about 5mi away . We visited the oldest church in Central America (see pics below). Then we visited someone who makes an alcoholic fruit drink, somewhere between wine and vodka, and sells it in recycled bottles (labels are not indicative of what's in the bottle). It's made of seven different fruit (apples, cherries, strawberries, and I don't know the rest) and tastes like a schnapps - not bad.

Got back at 5pm, so it wasn't a long trip.

I felt like having a nice steak, so the owner told me about this Uruguayan place I could walk to. Seems like I was walking for an hour because I was tired and hungry, but it probably was less than 30 min. When I got there, it was all locked up. Guess what? It's Monday. No sign outside to tell you when they're open. Finally figured it out as I walked away.

I saw a sign in a window of another restaurant, as I was walking to the first one, that advertised a cheeseburger w/fries for Q26; most places sell a burger for Q40. So I decided to stop in. Nice place (see pics). At 6pm, I was the only one in there. The burger was about 5 in across - big bun - but the meat was only as thick as a fast food place. Still, it hit the spot. So, instead of spending $30, I only spent $3, and I was satisfied (not as satisfied as I would have been with a good steak and a nice wine, but that's okay).

Spent the rest of the evening reading before bed.
