We met the girls in Cabanas at 8:15 so we could be in Fathoms at 9:00 for our excursion.
In Villefranche, we have to tender to get to the shore so, after checking in, we were led down to deck 1 and boarded a small boat that took us to the dock
. We me our guide for the day who took us to our bus and off we were.
Villefranche is a small town that was established sometime in the 1600s and was an important fortress for defending the area. Villefranche means "Free Town" because historically there were no taxes charged to people who lived here.
Our bus drove us to Nice up the hill and back down into Nice. Our bus dropped us off near a park that was built over a major river and is now a public park area. We then walked into the old part of Nice where we were given an hour of free time in the historic area of town.
We walked to a Cathedral and took photos around the area. Some of the places we stopped was for ice cream cones and also a candy & cookie shop. We wandered around a little longer before heading back to meet the bus.
We drove past Villefranche on the way to Eze which is a medieval town
. We stopped in Eze for lunch at a restaurant called Collette Café. We were served nicoise salad, bread then entrée of chicken with mushrooms, roasted potatoes and green beans. Dessert was ice cream with a raspberry sauce.
We had about 20 minutes to walk through the cobblestone streets of the medieval town before getting back on our bus and riding to Monaco.
Monaco is the second smallest country in the world at only 1 square mile. But, we found the real estate prices to be fair at $125,000 per 1 square meter so as soon as we get home we will start searching for our vacation home.
We parked in a garage and took an escalator, elevator and another escalator to the Rock of Monaco where the Palace and Cathedral are. There is also a Maritime Museum (which we didn't go to)and a park as well as homes and shops.
Our guide took us around the rock and then gave us about 30 minutes of free time
. We picked up a souvenir and then went to the cathedral.
We got back on the bus and headed to Monte Carlo. We drove along the formula 1 track before arriving near the famous casino of Monaco. The Casino was built as a revenue stream for the Principality because the country lost 2/3 of its tax base in the 1800s when Italy was reunified and regions of Monaco chose to become part of France.
We walked up the stairs from the sea to the casino where we were told about the area and the casino before being given free time to either pay the 10 Euro fee to go into the casino or walk around. Since we weren’t planning on gambling we sat in the sun on a bench and people watched.
Our bus took us back to the ship where we boarded the tender and then waited about half an hour before we pulled alongside the ship because there were two tenders ahead of us that needed to unload passengers.
We went directly to dinner since we were late because of the delay getting back onto the ship.
Then we decided to head up for a quick swim before turning in since we have a 7:00 am excursion tomorrow. Well, we decided to do some laundry so turning in early went by the wayside and we turned in about on time.
