Day 26 - Lay Around Morning, Dam Afternoon

Cody, Wyoming, United States
Today was supposed to be our second full day in Yellowstone, but Jody didn't feel well this morning, so we just laid around the hotel most of the morning. By afternoon, she was feeling somewhat better, so we decided to visit the Buffalo Bill Dam, especially since it was only four miles away. Since there were tunnels through the mountain between us and the Buffalo Bill Dam, we also wanted to set up the GoPro camera on the bike and capture a couple of videos, one going west to the dam, and one going east back to the hotel. They're attached below. Since the tunnels are right near the Buffalo Bill Dam, they are at the end of the westbound video and at the beginning of the eastbound.
The Buffalo Bill Dam was an interesting visit . Admission was free, but they charged $3 each for an audio tour to explain everything. So being the big spenders, we sprung for the audio tour. Before we set out, we watched about a 15 minute movie showing how the dam was built, and some of the problems encountered. It turned out the audio tour just played back the exact same information we just saw in the film. Could have saved six bucks! The tour was pretty much limited to the top part of the dam which is why there are no pictures of it looking up from the bottom. It is over 300 ft high, and since the edge was straight down with nothing but a metal railing between me and the edge, Jody had to take the pictures on the dam side. I had no trouble with the reservoir side.
Evidently, there is very little water in this part of Wyoming, so if there is to be any farming or even significant ranching, irrigation water is provided by damming up the rivers and providing water from the reservoirs. It was very educational, and of course the scenery was beautiful .
It seems we have eaten at all the most recommended restaurants in Cody, at least according to TripAdvisor, so tonight it was time for some good old fashioned Subway. The other thing we noticed tonight was when we gassed up the bike at the Sinclair station nearby, it had 6 pumps, but was totally unmanned. There was just a little shack building with no windows, and the pumps were just there like a regular station. They only took plastic, and they had little television screens where they displayed the local weather forecast as you filled up. I kept wondering if there was a video camera somewhere where someone was watching from the comfort of their living room. Who knew that running a gas station was a telecommuting occupation!
Normally, we would have just stayed in Cody to make up for the lost day, but last night we made reservations for the next few hotel nights to be sure we would have a place at Glacier National Park. So tomorrow we will be passing back through Yellowstone on our way to Bozeman, Montana so we will try to see as much of Yellowstone as we can as we pass through coming in from the Northeast Entrance by way of the Beartooth Highway and going out the North Entrance to Bozeman.
