Seattle, Washington, United States
Today was our first day playing tourist in Seattle, but at 6:00AM Seattle is still asleep. We tried to sleep in a little, and by the time we had breakfast and puttered around we were able to stretch it out to 8:00AM. Luckily, the Chihuly Glass exhibit opens at 8:00, so we headed over there to begin our day. First on the agenda was to buy a Citypass, which is a combined ticket to several of the more popular tourist spots. It saves a lot on admission fees. The girl at Chihuly sold us the Citypass, but advised us to head over to the Space Needle first before the lines got long.
When we reached the Space Needle, there was no line, and we were able to walk right up to the ticket booth to trade in our Citypass vouchers for real tickets, and head over to the elevator . They took a complimentary picture of us just as we came in, that you could reclaim on the computer and email to yourself and friends. There were only a handful of us in the elevator when we quickly rode to the top. When we landed at the top, the elevator let out on an enclosed deck, where we looked around for a few minutes before heading outside. The height wasn't too bad to deal with as there was a pretty good safety railing and glass. I could get pretty close to the edge to take pictures, and of course, Jody had no trouble whatsoever.
So we took a bunch of pictures from the top, and they had a selfie camera setup outside also where you scanned your ticket and stood on a spot and it would take a picture that you could email also. Nice touch! There was also a Starbucks at the top, so since it wasn't too busy yet, we both had coffee sitting at a table checking out the view. What a way to spend your morning.
After the Space Needle, we headed over to the Chihuly Garden and Glass. The exhibit was wonderful, we saw a Chihuly exhibit in St Petersburg once, and this one was even better . In addition to the typical displays and chandeliers, they had an outside garden where the glass was co-mingled with the plants and the result was spectacular. After checking out the exhibits, there were five 4-minute video clips to watch in the theater explaining how the various glass was made.
After Chihuly, we headed over to the EMP (Experience Music Project) Museum. We weren't sure what to expect, but we had heard many good things about this museum. It's kind of a mixture of movies, music, video games, sci-fi, and pop culture. We started at the special exhibit of Star Wars costumes, and they had many original costumes on display. Many were very intricate and well done. From there we moved on to a section on Horror Movies.
Jimmy would have liked this section, as it went into some of the history of horror movies, some of the various types, and they had a lot of original costumes and props from some of the more important movies.   They had Jason, Texas Chainsaw, and Evil Dead, but nothing from Nightmare on Elm Street . We took a bunch of pictures and watched some of the film clips and interviews. The science fiction section was also fun as they had stuff from some of the early sci-fi movies along with some Dr Who stuff and of course, Terminator and Alien. There was also a fantasy movie section, but neither of us are big fantasy fans except that they did have the costumes from Labyrinth that I'm sure Cindy would have liked.
From the movie exhibits they went to the music exhibits. They had a huge multi-story tower of guitars in the lobby. They had a comprehensive history of the guitar, along with the development of the electric guitar. They even had a section on the development of the bass guitar that my brother Jerry would have liked. Jimi Hendrix was being featured, and they had a bunch of film clips and original memorabilia from his era. Jody especially like the punk stuff which came out of the Seattle area before it went mainstream.
There was a section on animation, and a section on video games including an area where it looked like a group were working on video game development . Upstairs was a sound studio, where people could play various instruments in a booth to see how they sounded. Mostly it was guitar and keyboard, but everyone seemed to be having a great time.
When we finished up with EMP, we decided to take a little break and drop t-shirts off back at the hotel before venturing back out. When we got back, we stopped at the Armory, a kind of central food court in the area, and had some Starbucks iced coffees. It's nice to be back in civilization again sometimes. After coffee, we decided to visit the Pacific Science Center before calling it a day. It wasn't bad for a science center, but it was really geared more for children. It has a planetarium and an iMAX theater, but we didn't want to see the iMAX movies they were showing, so we decided to go to the Laser Light Show. We hadn't been to a good laser light show in a long time, and this one was pretty good. It lasted about a half-hour and was called the Daft Punk show. The music was great along with the light show .
By the time we got back to the hotel, we were getting pretty tired and hungry. The hotel dinner recommendations mentioned a Thai place up the road and that sounded great. We checked the menu online and it looked good. So we found the place quickly, and as we got there we noticed a small sign on the door - "closed for vacation July 1-7". Bummed, we headed back to the hotel for another choice. Sure enough, down the road just a little bit more was another Thai place, looked good so we headed over. When we got to the second place we noticed a small sign on the door - "closed for vacation July 1-7". Looks like collusion to me. So we gave up and headed back to the food court at the Armory. We were tired of trying to find a restaurant. Maybe we'll have better luck tomorrow.
Tomorrow we plan to finish the Citypass attractions with a visit to the Seattle Aquarium and a ride on a Harbor Cruise. If we have time, we will try for the Underground Tour. Should be a fun day. Today, we never even started the motorcycle so we have 0 miles. But our pedometers registered over 15,000 steps. That's like over 6 miles! No wonder we're tired!
