Day 61 - A Bad Hair Day in San Francisco

Thursday, July 23, 2015
San Francisco, California, United States
First, let me start out by stating that we didn't have any plans to do anything productive today, and we were completely successful in that endeavor. We needed to catch up on our sleep in a comfortable bed, and that we did do. Then, we got a little breakfast at the pastry shop across the street which was delicious. After that, we were just going to hang around the hotel until 11:00 so we could go to the hair salon called "On Mars"  and see the stylist Rachel recommended by the lady at the desk last night so Jody could get her roots done.
So at 10:45 we head out to On Mars, and it was a beautiful walk through the neighborhood . When we got there, the sign in the window said Closed, Be back at 12:00. So we took a different way back to the hotel and did a little more exploring in the neighborhood. At 12:00 we headed back, and when we got there they were open, but after a discussion with Rachel and the other stylists there, they came to the conclusion that none of them used the same dye product that Jody's Orlando stylist used. They were very helpful though, and recommended another salon called Pretty Pretty Collective in the Mission District that did use the right product. After confirming on the internet that they did use the right products, we headed over.
Now one thing about Mapquest that we never really thought about was that while it gives you the shortest way from one place to another, it doesn't take into account elevation. So we headed up Noe St into the Mission District, and when I say "up Noe St", I really mean UP! We only had to go from 16th St to 22nd St, but Noe St seemed like a vertical climb to get to 20th, and then to 22nd was such a steep drop into the Mission District that the sidewalks actually were steps . They park the cars at 90 degrees to the sidewalk, and when you look at them, the drivers side springs are actually extended and the passenger side springs are compressed. We saw some woman pushing a baby carriage up the hill, and it was practically comical it was so steep.
But we did make it down to the Pretty Pretty Collective, and it quite a funky salon. Both the building and the staff were equally interesting. They were very nice, and fit Jody in at 2:00 so we had 45 minutes to kill. Seemed like a perfect time for coffee. Thanks to Around Me, we found just the right coffee shop right around the corner. Made it back by 2:00, and now Jody's hair is back to being as beautiful as ever.    By 3:30, we were on our way back to the hotel. This time Mapquest had a much better route that didn't involve any mountain climbing. On the way back we passed the Clarion Alley Murals. They were awesome, so we stopped to take some pictures. We also passed by the Delores Mission, oldest structure in San Francisco .
Now before anyone gets the idea that today was a bad day in San Francisco, let me just say that this is a spectacular city. The neighborhoods are wonderful, there are so many different shops and restaurants everywhere, I don't know how you could ever learn them all. There are people everywhere, and while some might look a little strange, everyone we met was very nice and helpful. When they say a city is vibrant, you can really feel something special in San Francisco. People are going places, doing things, having fun with friends, meeting new people, there's just so much happening here! The houses and neighborhoods are awesome! Lots of tall skinny residential buildings, very colorful, with lots of pride of ownership. Lots of renovations going on also. You can tell, people like living here. Unfortunately, it's all happening at about 68 degrees in the summer, just a little too cold for us. We really miss the warmth of Florida.
Tonight is also laundry night, so we needed to eat quick to get back for laundry. We picked a place called Starbelly, which is a little patio bar with what are supposed to be the best burgers in town. They sure were juicy and delicious! Tomorrow we will take the streetcar over to Fisherman's Wharf. We would have liked to go on the Alcatraz tour, but they book up weeks in advance, and we couldn't be certain when we would be here in San Francisco to book them ahead of time. We will try to take the Harbor Tour so we can at least see it from afar.
