Mt Titlis and Grindelwald

Grindelwald, Bern, Switzerland
Up and packed and had our last breakfast at our lovely Lucerne hotel.

Bev & I waited at the hotel while Jeff & Jill went to collect our hire car - an epic saga taking about an hour and half due to having to upgrade the car a couple of sizes plus paperwork .

Just as Bev and I decided to start taking our cases up to the carpark (our hotel was in a pedestrian only zone), Jeff & Jill arrived. Excellent timing. Even with the bigger boot it was still a massive Jenga / Tetris challenge to fit all the cases in the back but we did it! Fist pump moment of the day.

We drove away from Lucerne through valleys towards our first destination - Mt Titlis.

We can see why this one is so popular as it's super easy to get to and there is snow year round. Plus the summit is not super steep like some other mountains.

Interesting Rotair revolving gondola on the way up, makes one revolution during the trip. Great idea to give everyone an equal view.

Loved Mt Titlis - what an amazing, beautiful place. Lots of snow to walk around in but not too cold as only 3,238m (only!!)

We had lots of fun having snowball fights and making snow angels. The snow was very soft & powdery making it lovely to play in.

We also did the super scary (not scary at all) clifftop walk on the see through bridge. Meant to be a 500m drop but didn't look like it. Normally I'm not a fan of walking on see through metal grids but this one was fine . We all trotted across happily. Even Bev was non-plussed by the drop.

Unfortunately the Ice Flyer to the snow play field had shut by the time we decided to do that so Jeff & I just went for a walk down a different snow covered path while Bev & Jill stayed back to have hot drinks and eat chocolate.

On our way back up the hill Jeff & I were nearly run over by a run-away snow plow (not really).

Great view of snow covered mountains all around and leading down to the green valleys dotted with Heidi houses, cows and goats - all with tinkling bells (not the houses or mountains - just the cows and goats).

Black birds riding the thermals appeared to be hovering in the air over the outdoor picnic tables.

The only bad part of our visit to Mt Titlis ... what felt like a million loud, pushing asian tourists all rushing to be first everywhere. They get so frantic! Jeff and I both had to give a couple a hard shove and a telling off a few times as they were nearly bowling Bev over! And you know, it's the women who are the rudest.

It's also a very poular spot for Indian tourists. There's even a curry van in the cable car waiting area at the bottom. A bit odd we thought, then when we got up the top there was a Bollywood cutout of Shahrukh Khan and some lady you could pose with . Hmmm, weird we thought. Turns out a well known Bollywood movie was filmed here about 10 years ago. If nothing else, the Swiss know how to capitalise on the tourist dollar (or Rupee in this case)!

Back down the mountain and after a look at the end of the valley and it's gnomes we headed off to Grindelwald. Jeff is doing a great job with driving on the wrong side of the road. Jill and I played the part of the naughty children in the back seat.

Lovely scenery along the way - especially near the Brienz pass with some amazing wateralls shooting off the edge of the mountains into the valley below.

Arrived around 8pm, found the office to collect our keys and after negotiating a one lane road with two coach tour buses on it we found our lovely Heidi House chalet for the next 5 nights.

We had kept this a secret from both Bev and Jill and I think both were suitably impressed. We have an amazing view towards Jungfrau. Snow capped mountains rise over us, and the other side of Grindelwald town rises up the green valley wall. Lovely lovely.

Unpacked and pottered around then into town for dinner at an italian restaurant where the friendly lady also sold us some milk for breakfast tomorrow (no where else open).

Back home to our lovely chalet to read up on things to do here and eventually rest our weary heads.

Goodnight Captain Goatherd.
