Think we just ate a dead Dodo

Triolet, Pamplemousses District, Mauritius
Good morning Mauritius!

Still a bit overcast but morning showed us the view of the beautiful ocean right at our feet (damn you global warming) . No, it was actually at the edge of the property and not lapping around our ankles. Lucky seeing we're on the 3rd floor.

This is a smallish boutique hotel, but it still has a pool and a beachside cocktail bar plus "ahem" water sports and a really lovely outlook to have breakfast at.

Kunal was right on time to pick us up at 9am and we headed off to the markets in Port Louis, about a half hour drive away.

Pretty cool looking around the fresh food markets. All the vendors have their produce stacked up so nicely. Very picturesque.

We bought fresh pineapple which we later ate sprinkled with chilli powder (yes weird) and something that was passed off as Mauritian cherries but tasted more like Lilly Pillys (yuk).

After the food markets we had a quick look through the adjoining kak markets and then over to the waterfront area. Lots of shops closed as it's a public holiday today but we still managed to have some sweet freshly squeezed sugar cane juice and a crepe. Very nice area - we might have to come back for dinner one night.

After a drive around town and up to the fort for a look over the harbour we headed over to Pamplemousse gardens. Raining too much so elected to have lunch first nearby .

Kunal picked his favourite tourist restaurant near the gardens. It's his favourite because they give taxi drivers a free meal. Arguably the worst meal ever. There was a Dodo painted on the wall of the restaurant - thinking this is what the meat might have been!

Still raining a lot after our "lunch", so off to the nearby L'Adventure Sucre - a world of sugar museum housed inside an old sugar mill. Soooooo much information on the history of Mauritius and sugar cane growing. How much can there be to say about sugar? A shit load apparently. The thing I most remember is they make about 20 different types of sugar in Mauritius and we were able to taste test some of them. Surprisingly there's distinct differences in taste and texture between them. Spent 2hrs + here. I'm just thankful that they didn't have an audio guide or we'd probably still be there.
Oh, and the sugar world had a really nice cafe with great looking meals for the same price as the dodo meat restaurant. Super.

Off to beautiful Grand Baie for a quick look before sunset. Unfortunately the rain started up again but it was worth the visit because we saw a flock of bright orange cardinals here. Lots of photos taken. Or more accurately "lots of photos of orange blurs" taken.

Really started to chuck it down so we took refuge in a little cafe and indulged in cake and coconut brownies then waded back to Kunal and came back to the resort.

Had planned on room service for dinner but passed out instead. Still a good day despite rain and dead dodo for lunch.
