Isle de la Reunion and the Chompys

Saint-Paul, Pamplemousses District, Reunion
Woke up to an absolutely beautiful day. So this is what it's meant to look like in Mauritius!

Decided to go for a 7am swim and it was wonderful . Water calm and warm, powder soft white sand, sun shining, just us, the guard and one guy fishing. Very peaceful and yay I've finally had a swim in Mauritius! The water was very clear and we could see lots of fish swimming around us too.

Went for a quick dip in the resort pool too then after showers settled down for a leisurely breakfast of crepes for me and scrambled eggs for Jeff.

Sadly packed and checked out then sat around the hotel for an hour or so waiting for our airport pickup. What a gorgeous day and the scenery at the hotel. Wow. Wow, wow! It looked like the postcards you see of a tropical idyl. Hard to believe that it's been pouring down most days.

Never mind, 4 seasons in one day and all that, half way to the airport it started bucketing again. And then Kunal told us he's heard there's another anti cyclone forming and laughed. Yeah thanks.

Arrived in Ile de la Reunion in less time than it took to drive to the airport to fly there! On the plane the Intro to Reunion even mentioned the sharks .

*We've since found out that over the paltry 12kms of beach in Reunion that 20 shark attacks have happened in the last 5 years. And yet Australia has a bad rep for chompy sharks!

Luggage collected, EUR from the ATM and off to collect the car.

Uh oh. For some reason we haven't booked a GPS and they don't have any left. Oh farrrrrrk!
The hire car girlie drew us a mud map to the closest shopping centre so we could find a local SIM and use a phone as a GPS. Managed to find it and sent Jeff in to get a SIM.

He found a phone shop easy enough & the guy in there even spoke some English, much to Jeff's relief!

Jeff: Can I get a SIM card for this phone please?

Phone Guy: Yes but sorry, no Internet. Only calls.

Jeff: Are you kidding? No way possible to get any Internet on a pre-paid phone?

Phone guy: No. Sorry.

Jeff: (wondering what to do) ... so is there another phone shop here that might have a pre-paid SIM with Internet?

Phone Guy: Oh yes, just down there about 100m.

Jeff: thanks *shakes head*

You obviously have to know the right questions to ask ...!

With our new SIM and phone plugged in, we were finally able to head off to our resort ... now right on dusk and peak hour. Super!

Had "fun" trying to get the car head lights on while driving down the highway. Gawd. The final leg was descending from the highway down the mountain to the coast on a smaller road with nil street lighting. And all of this while driving on the right (as in the other side to Australia) side of the road too.

Quite a stressful journey and we were both very happy to arrive at our hotel!

Hotel super nice. Plantation style architecture and a bed so high I almost needed a ladder to get into it.

Night night captain Chompy.
