Epic's Last Stand

Moab, Utah, United States
We had breakfast in a little diner before leaving town and talked to a older couple who were touring around the west and getting ready to head home. We headed out of town and connected to highway 666 no kidding. It has been renamed. We went through the Anasazi bean capital of the world, Dove Creek, CO. We filled up in Monticello, UT and headed the back way in to the Canyon Lands. We rode all the way to the end of the road and stopped to take pictures. When Rob left his bike a raven immediate landed on the pack and tried to figure out how to get in. Rob had to stand guard to keep the ravens away. A pickup pulled up and the two guys left to take pictures and the ravens got into the truck's bed and got into a day pack. Rob didn't want to go toward the truck because he was worried they would think he was trying to steal their property. Anyway, the raven unzipped the day pack; got into it; punctured a pack of cigarettes; and got something in its beak and flew away. When we rode out of there, there was a civic with its windows open and the ravens were after it big time.

While I was guarding the motorcycles from the ravens, three men walked by, one saw my shirt and said IREA that is not from Oregon . I said no I'm from Colorado, they had seen Jeff's license plate. They live in Centennial and have a cabin in Jefferson County. I thanked them for paying my salary and hoped they were getting good service They said inevitably when they go up to their cabin their clocks are flashing.

We received some cloud cover on our way out of the park and a too brief rain storm. Just out of Moab is a little tourist trapped call the Hole in the Wall. A 5000 square foot house carved out of a sandstone cliff. There was a lot of tourist stuff, including a zoo. We went into the General Store and cooled in their air conditioning and drank some fluids. The store had tons of memorabilia on the walls and ceilings. A time capsule.

We stopped at Moab Brewing and had a light lunch and....beer. We headed out to our evenings abode, Moab Under Canvas, there waws about a half of a mile of gravel roads but no problem with the bikes . We checked in and were taken to our tents. There was no electricity in the tents, just the office tent. Nick and Rob went back to the office tent to plug in all of our electronics. The wind had been blowing hard all day and while standing there talking to an employee we heard over their radios a guy say that if the wind gets to 45 MPH they would have to evacuate. Nick and Rob looked at the girl and asked how that is accomplished. She said everyone would be told to get in their cars where it would be safer. The tents were engineered to withstand 60 mph winds and the large lodge tent was designed to withstand 90 mph winds. We remind her that we were on motorcycles. She said that we should probably head into Moab. Rob told her that if the wind was that strong we would not be able to ride. She said they would figure something out. It was very windy but it calmed for the evening. Very pleasant evening on the porch talking with each other.
