Jan 21 - Adventure on the low seas

South Padre Island, Texas, United States
The weather this morning said "20 degrees. Freezing fog."  LOL - what the heck does that mean? They don't know "freezing" here. The nice thing is that it was calm today - no wind. :)

We decided to head over to the Sealife Centre, where they have some displays of smaller turtles, hermit crabs, sea horses, etc . They also have dolphin tours. I had read on TripAdvisor that it's run by a family, and that Scarlet, the mom, is known around the area as the dolphin whisperer. Her tours are highly recommended, as it's maximum 6 people per tour and so it's much more personal. She also has a smaller boat, and is very good at finding the dolphins, who seem to know her out there. She has a little dog named Rozie who watches for the dolphins and points them out, barking when he sees them.

Because it was so calm today, Scarlet said it was a 10 out of 10 day to go out. Cost per person was $25 for 1.5 hrs. There were the three of us, Scarlet, and two other people who were Scarlet's friends. It was fantastic - when Scarlet and Rozie spotted dolphins, Scarlet called out to them and them came in close, sometimes right beside the boat. Rozie would bark at them and run back and forth on the boat. Adorable little guy. He would hang right off the side of the boat - Scarlet said he jumps in sometimes. I think I was sitting in his spot, because he would jump right up on my lap to get a better view. One of Scarlet's tricks was to run her boat around in a slow circle - she said the dolphins like playing in the bubbles and, sure enough, they did.

It was a beautiful day out there - 26 degrees. Scarlet said she calls it "adventure on the low seas", because the water is so shallow in the canal. It was a 10 out of 10 day. :o)
