South Padre Island, Texas, United States
Jan 22
Temps in the mid-high 70's today, but wow, was it windy . We made brunch, then I headed to the Farmers Market to see if I could pick up one of those neat coloured cauliflower. I was there early enough this week to pick one up (an orange one). Am excited to try it.

Then Gil, Roger & I went to the Flea Market at Port Isabel. Roger dickered for Girl Scout cookies, and Gil bought 4 decks of cards for $1 (Lois says they already have 55 decks at home ... so now they have 59. lol). Since I have beat they boys twice now at Gil's Lambsy rummy game, he figures I must be marking the cards, hence the new decks. He's not taking it too well. ;o)

It was NFL playoff game day, so Gil & Roger were busy watching the games. Lots of trash talk going on between Gil & Roger. Lois & I tried to read by the pool, but it was too chilly (because of the wind and clouds) so we went back into the condo and played Scrabble. Boy, we were within 10 points the whole game. We're really closely matched.

Last nite, there was some "drama on Lantana St". We heard sirens that seemed to stop very nearby. Then we noticed five police vehicles three doors down from us, and people crying on the driveway. They were there for hours. We heard from a neighbor that the lady came home and found her husband had passed away. Very sad.

Today in the paper, they had an article in the local paper about the shortage of policing in Brownsville (25 miles from here). There, the number of police officers per 1,000 residents is 1.4; here in South Padre Island, it's 10 officers per 1,000 people. Appears that they are trying to keep the island safe for all the tourists.Explains why there were 5 police vehicles here last nite.

Roger & Gil had a tee off at 1:15 today in Brownsville, so Lois and I went along and did some shopping. Afterward, we went for supper at a big Chinese food buffet. We were all fried from a long day, so had a quiet evening watching tv and reading.

Yes, we leave for New Orleans on Thurs and, you're right, the time has flown by. We've had a great time with Gil & Lois. We'll look forward to hooking back up with them in San Antonio in a few weeks.
