Feb 1 - New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA)

New Orleans, Louisiana, United States
Feb 1
Brie & Ryan made it thru their 21 hours of flights to Bangkok . They said it's so humid they can hardly breath, but that it feels nice.

It poured rain here this morning, and then on and off for the rest of the day. Humidity is 96%. Although it was pretty hot and extremely humid in SPI, it's been dry and cool since we're here in New Orleans, so the high humidity is a change.

We saw on the internet that Wednesdays are free admission days at the New Orleans Museum of Art. Since we're not museum or gallery people, we figured if we don't go when it's free we won't go at all. Seems like a good activity for a rainy day.

We saw some interesting pieces, including lots of paintings and artifacts from up to 1600 B.C., as well as paintings by some famous artists like Andy Warhol, Picassa, Renoir, Monet, and Degas (who lived in New Orleans for a while in the early 1900's).

The thing that we were most impressed with was the Student Art Exhibit. Some amazing talent. We were particularly amazed by the winning piece in the K-2 category, done by a Gr 2 student.

By the way, Lorraine had asked a few days ago if the area we are living in was flooded during Katrina. Roger found a book on Katrina in our house and it says that 80% of New Orleans was flooded. The French Quarter and downtown are on higher ground, so they were mostly spared, but this area and most others were flooded. Not sure how bad it was here. Will ask Bob next time we see him.

After supper, we walked to the little coffee shop on the corner, and had King Cake and played Lambsy. We have to practice up for when we are with Gil again. ;o)

hmmmmmmm I really like it & I shouldn't be such a cynic, but i seriously doubt that a grade 2 student did that drawing w/o help from mom & or dad? I agree with Roger - I like that urn too... re the flooding - is there still a lot of visible damage etc where you are?

Roger liked the urn mostly because he thought it was cool that it was from A.D. 1. LOL. Re. the flooding - we haven't seen any significant visible damage where we have been. From what I have read, it's mostly in the 9th District - apparently you don't want to go there without a tour bus - lots of drugs and gangs among the still damaged buildings.
