Feb 6 - Food & music

New Orleans, Louisiana, United States
Holy cow, it was a chilly 59 degrees in the house this morning. It went down into the 40's last nite. Brrr. Looks like we're back to seasonal temperatures for this area. :(

We went for a ride this afternoon to get some groceries & drug store items in the afternoon, then went for a walk to the book store & coffee shop down the road from our house . It was actually very pleasant out, although I was wearing a t-shirt, a sweater, a coat, jeans, socks, runners (no flip flops - too cold) ... and gloves. I know, no sympathy from home about the weather, although from what we have seen on the internet you're having a nice February.

Tonite we took the bus down to the French Quarter to eat at the Port of Call restaurant. They are famous for their 1/2 pound burgers & baked potatoes (oh good ... more healthy food!). Then we went to the Old Opera House on Bourbon Street to listen to Cajun/Zydeco music. Zydeco music is a combination of Cajun, Creole, blues, and rhythm & blues music. The band playing was a group of four young guys called the Bonoffs. Isn't the guy with the washboard vest cool? (see video). The vest is called a frottoir or vest frottoir (from Cajun French, meaning "vest to be rubbed"). In Zydeco bands, the frottoir is usually played with bottle openers, to make a louder sound. We enjoyed the Bonoffs so much, we bought their CD.

When we got home, Brie saw I was on Facebook and messaged me. We had a nice long chat. It was 11 am Tues there (10 pm Mon here). They were about to leave Bangkok for an hour long flight to Cambodia. They have some amazing pictures of their trip on Facebook if you're able to get on and see. My favorites so far are the ones at the Tiger Temple. :)

Yikes, that burger was massive LOL How did he get his mouth around it? never mind, I don't want to know LOL The Bonoffs sound more like a Cajun band? Zydeco bands usually use piano accordions, not button boxes.... Loved the music anyway ;o) Ask Brie if she can provide a link to her FB pix that I can get at? Carol can do it but I don't know how......
