French Quarter

New Orleans, Louisiana, United States
It was a cold one last nite, and temperature today was only low 60's. The only heat they have in the house is a window AC/heater in the sitting room, and a ceramic heater in the bedroom.
Wow, was that toilet seat cold this morning! Roger even had socks on when we had breakfast, and I almost put my leather gloves on for breakfast (I did wear them when we went out) .

I forgot to mention yesterday that Bob & Billie had a food plate waiting for us in the fridge - pastries, buns, cheese, apples, oranges and bananas, plus the fridge is stocked with butter, eggs, jam and a bunch of condiments. How sweet are they?!

We had set up a Skype call with Brie & Ryan at 1:00 today, to wish them well on their honeymoon trip. They leave at 7:50 am on Tues. So exciting!!! I wish we could have popped home to give them a hug before they go. We had to make do with video hugs. After we talked to them, we called Roger's mom & dad and talked to mom for a bit. All is well with them - nobody sick, having a mild winter so she figures it will hit on March 1 when we get home. She said "we miss you buggers."  She's so funny. ;o)

We spent the rest of the day in the French Quarter. We walked from here, and saw some fantastic houses along the way on Esplanade St, which runs right into the French Quarter . I had found a walking tour online, so we hit a lot of the highlights but will go back another day. When we were at the amazing St. Louis Cathedral on Jackson Square, we noticed people setting up for a wedding in the square. What a beautiful location with the cathedral in the background.

We went over to take a closer look, and ended up having a nice chat with the grandma of the bride, who was having a breakdown as she had been assigned to set up the ceremony site. She told us about her granddaughter (just became a neurologist), and about the ceremony, which was to start at 4 (in half an hour). We stuck around, but when the bride still wasn't there at 4:15, we left. We happened to be passing by again at 5:10, and the bride was just getting there. Can you imagine being that late for your wedding?? We were talking to another lady who said there were rumblings of runaway bride. lol. That poor grandma must have been having a heart attack. The most interesting part was that, after the ceremony, they had a brass band of old black musicians waiting to parade then down the streets of the French Quarter . The grandma told us it's called a "second line", where the "main line" was the bride & groom and their wedding party, followed by the band, and then the rest of the wedding guests twirling parasols or handkerchiefs in the air. They walked blocks thru the French Quarter to their reception location, with everyone on the street cheering them on and joining in. It was so cool!

We had the New Orleans tradition, bigneits (pronounced ben-yays), in the afternoon for a snack. They reminded us of bannock - deep fried dough with about a cup of icing sugar on each one. For supper, we ate at The Gumbo Shop, as recommended by our nephew Sean (Gil & Lois' son). According to the web, it's the best gumbo restaurant in New Orleans. So, we started with crab cakes, then Roger had seafood gumbo and I had chicken gumbo. Mmmmmm.

Lucky you, catching that wedding with unique traditions ;o) I sure remember that building (hotel) with the balconies in Jackson Square. We were there for Carnival, & women on those balconies were lifting their shirts & flipping their bare boobs to the crowds below LOL Too bad you're going to miss that Roger ;o)

Yesterday was just awesome here, warm and almost no wind to speak of. We went for a walk on the beach and caught a wedding! Just like you. This one was small with about 6 people plus the man officiating. Today is dreary with a rain shower so not sure if Gil will get wet 'playing in the rain'. He was to golf with Randy and Vivian but they returned early, fair weather golfers.
