Since I was here ten years ago I can only comment of two big changes I have seen so far, the first being the absence of the beautiful flowing white dress worn by the young women. It is called the ao dai. It has slits on each side to the waist and is worn over silk pants. It must have been a school uniform then as it was everywhere, young girls on bicycles wearing it were a memory that stayed with me. Lots of women still wear it, more so coloured and more so for people tending shops or dealing with tourists. It is very sexy really, as it covers everything but hides nothing. The young women are very shapely and petite so they do it justice. The conical hat remains the most common form of sunshade.
The other change is Nha Trang, it has exploded into a tourist metropolis
. Barely recognizable to me. The Russians have poured money and themselves into it, so it has everything now, cable cars over the water to fancy resorts, all cuisines, bars, breweries, yacht clubs and very scanty young girls, which is not the norm for Vietnamese women. And Russians and russian signage everywhere, makes the Vietnamese written word look almost straight forward.
We were warned also to take care for theft and scams here, so this is a new thing too. Comes with the process I suppose.
Yesterday was a lovely change of pace, wandering around a little fishing village and then boating out to an snorkelling and swimming area. Eating and drinking and massages all on board, and nice interactions with the crew as they are so keen to improve their English.
Now the next day , have no idea what that is, but we have done our hard hot 60 klms this morning and are now crawling very slowly in the bus, up to Dalat which lies at 1500 metres above sea level. Promising a cooler temperature and some more varied flora.
Only two days riding left and we are nearly toughened up for more, but maybe not. We certainly are seeing, smelling and tasting all that Vietnam has to offer along the way.
