Big but a little disappointing, so often the case

The ship really is a bit of a disappointment. It looks and feels older than it should. Our rooms appear to have been decorated long before last century ended and there's mould growing on our balcony. I asked our steward if the balcony would be washed, because there's coffee (or blood?) spilled everywhere. That was on day one, today is day four and it's still not done.

Mum's room has a funny smell and everything they've done to fix it has failed .

The food is much better than I expected, and any of the problems with the ship's décor and upkeep are easily ignored in light of the excellent and entertaining staff. They work very hard to keep you happy. The wait-staff in the coffee shop and the dining room have remembered our names from day one.

The ship really is very large – today we found the hot dog stand for the first time, and there's a library that we can see through glass walls but we haven't found the door yet. There is a screening room, board rooms, a two level ice skating rink and an entire deck we haven't found.

Sea day

Fabulous weather today. The sea is that colour your paintbrush water turns when you're done with all the blues. Shafts of sunlight sparkle through the surface into the depths which make it excellent fishing conditions for a family of boobies (large seagull-like birds with blue beaks) who accompany the ship most of the day .

After a slow start Mum spends the afternoon sensibly resting and reading while Steven and I walk the top deck for 10 kilometres.

Tonight we eat dinner at one of the specially restaurants – the Grill. I'm not a big fan of red meat but I'm a bit underwhelmed by my steak - don't get me wrong, I like it when it's good, but this is boring.

Back in our cabins. We've had our coffee and cookies. Mum's in bed and Steven and I are watching a movie. We arrive in Hong Kong tomorrow at 10 pm, so it's another day of resting for Mum, and walking for Steven and me.
