Quake City regeneration

Christchurch, South Island, New Zealand
Surprised to wake up and the forecasted drizzle hadn't appeared and in fact it was a nice sunny day ideal for wandering around Christchurch. First stop was the 5 or 6 outward bound anorak shops but luckily no purchases. We then had a lovely half hour walk (flat and no hills or steps) into town through the park and botanical gardens. It was nice to see loads of kids playing organised sports such as soft ball with overly vocal parents. The botanical gardens were beautiful as usual with a nice rose garden, de riguer for the Ryans down under. Next stop lunch, essential after no breakfast or coffee stop. Great pizza (shared) at a very average looking bar but decided to have coffee later once we'd found a phone shop to look at my temperamental iPhone (probably me not phone though). It was great to see how much regeneration has gone on in Christchurch since our visit a year ago but the Restart Mall was still in situ and a favoured coffee stop. We then spent the rest of the afternoon in the Quake Museum which gave a fascinating insight into the earthquakes that have persistently plagued Christchurch throughout history. Lovely evening drive out to Sumner for an early evening snifter and to see the containers lining the cliff edge to protect the road from falling rocks and further earthquakes.

Well done going to CHCH guys. It is amazing what is happening with the rebuild, but also very sobering that a (relatively - it is NZ!) civilised city can get so munted ... and also disappear off the world radar so quickly. Still raw for us having lived there and have mates with (still munted) property there. Let us hope the rebuild opportunity is really utilised for the better..

See you up here very soon!

PS Pretty brave doing the Transalpine return in on day!
