Around the Blackall Range

Maleny, Queensland, Australia
Woke to a bright sunny morning and caught up with Fiona who suggested a route around the Sunshine Coast hinterland. First stop the local town Maleny which is pretty with artistic shops and cafes, so after a good coffee and chat to the two lovely ladies in the tourism office we headed off. The scenery and views from the Blackall Range across to the Glasshouse Mountains (named by Captain Cook as they reminded him of glass furnaces) was stunning. We then drove along the Balmoral Ridge to Montville, another artistic town but a bit twee. This is an area where houses are built on stilts to keep cool, could have done with some stilts too as it was very hot and humid today. We stopped for lunch at Secrets on the Lake situated in the rainforest overlooking Lake Baroon. Great food but bit pretentious service and we definitely did not look suitable enough to be shown around the tree houses that formed the hotel. Next stop Kondalila National Park to walk to the waterfall. For once we were thankful for the bush covering but one look at the million steps to the waterfall was one step too many especially as we had been told the waterfall may not have been flowing. We then tried the Mapleton Falls but the viewing platform was closed and no water at these falls either. The drive back to Maleny along Kidaman Creek Road was picturesque although unsealed most of the way but we survived. Thought we'd have a beer in the only bar in town but looked very uninspiring so back to the Dairy to drink some of Graham's expensive beer. Surprising as food and eating out not as expensive as we had expected but beer!!
