Sovereign Hill Gold Rush

Port Fairy, Victoria, Australia
Meant to be up bright and early but rubbish nights sleep itching bites incurred when waiting for the crocodile boat. Still we were at the Sovereign Hill Cultural Gold Museum by 10.15 just after it opened.
A brilliant outdoor working museum telling the story of Ballarat's history following the gold rush in 1851 . Even better the temperature was a pleasant 25 degrees. 4 hours later with only a quick break for a good coffee we had seen every building and activity. We then went on the gold mine tour which was very well done with only 60 odd steps down. Wouldn't have fancied the mine lift anyway which had a death once a week on average. After lunch (Graham's first Aussie pie made in the bakery museum and very tasty) we spent a couple of hours in the museum learning more about the history of gold.
Finally left at 4pm for the couple of hours drive south to the Ocean Road at Port Fairy. Not the most interesting drive with miles of barren farms with scruffy homesteads looking like junk yards. It was a delight to reach the coast despite the 19 degrees and drizzle. Nice little apartment just back from the beach with excellent Greek fish and chips takeaway opposite so dinner sorted after a quick walk.
