A wet and misty Great Ocean Road

Apollo Bay, Victoria, Australia
We knew it was going to be an iffy day but 17 degrees, 90% humidity and low cloud for most of the day was a shame as we were travelling the Great Ocean Road. To set us up we stopped in Port Fairy for coffee (rubbish) and breakfast, not brilliant either but picnicing would be impossible. Quick drive past the Wharf in Port Fairy (would be nice to return on a sunny day) and off to the shipwreck coast.
First stop Tower Hill Reserve which is an extinct volcano where we were lucky enough to see thee Koalas
Then along the amazing shoreline which was impressive in that until you parked up and walked to the cliff edge you didn't realise it was so dramatic as the land adjacent was so flat. We stopped at various scenic spots along the route, donned macs and said hello to the same tourists throughout the day. Luckily the big tourist buses started from the Melbourne end so we didn't bump into them until the 12 Apostles and by then we could only see one Apostle in the mist. Nice to walk on the deserted beach with a nice Chinese tourist as the 54 steps deterred most others.
Final destination was Cape Otway Lighthouse on the most southern point of the Australian mainland. Unfortunately we could not actually walk to the lighthouse as it closed at 5pm, very annoying when we had driven the 12 kms without a sign anywhere about closing. So back the 12 kms and onto Apollo Bay which was open.
Lovelly digs at Captains Quarters with nice host Heather - didn't meet hubby who really is a Captain of a crayfish boat. Special trip downtown to the Great Ocean Road Brewhouse only to be disappointed once again. Cannot complain though at £5 for a beer and glass of wine even if they were both mediocre.
Hopefully the weather will improve for the rest of the Great Ocean Road tomorrow.
