A sunny Great Ocean Road

Melbourne, Victoria, Australia
Daily weather report, misty start but this cleared and then sunny which was great for our second day on the Great Ocean Road back to Melbourne and even a breezy 25 degrees.
Quick look at Apollo Bay harbour though not many fishing boats in which it is supposedly renowned for . Then a lovely drive along the coast. This section is much more like the English coastline but sad to see bush fire damage in parts.
First stop Lorne for routine coffee fix at the pier, very good. The pier used to bring in holiday makers but now only used for recreational fishing and the odd art sculpture. Up to Teddy's lookout (surveyor for the Great Ocean Road) then visited the info centre to view the displays on building the road in the 1920's. Several thousand out of work WW1 veterans were employed to build the road mostly by hand and with a few sticks of dynamite. Finally finished in 1932 and opened up the coastline to tourism, few too many Chinese coach parties today though.
Second stop Aireys Inlet for picnic at the lighthouse, one of the first built on the surf coast. We then drove out to Queenscliff and Point Lonsdale, the narrow entrance to Melbourne Harbour. The narrow channel of water is famously named The Rip and Ripcurl surf clothing believe it or not originated here. Even managed to find a steam train, The Bellarine, and even though not running the diesel locomotive moved her especially for Graham.
A very very slow drive into and through Melbourne to our digs in St. Kilda. Nice apartment near good bars and we found a great funky bar for dinner. First time on the trip that we had problems with digs. Although cleaned the room the bed was unmade and no spare key which was annoying. Early night for early rise to pick Sammy up from the airport.
