Temples of Angkor

Krong Siem Reap, Siem Reap Province, Cambodia
A fabulous day apart from poor Deborah tripping and hitting her head on a rock step. Despite all the blood she was ok and no concussion. We all walked around a little more carefully looking down as well as up.
Angkor Wat was amazing but as with any famous site very busy. Not sure the pictures do it justice though. We all managed to climb the steep stairs to the top level which gave a great view of the site. It was very very hot but our guide kept us in the shade as much as possible and we were on and off the bus taking advantage of the AC.
Afternoon visit to Angkor Thom, Big Angkor, which is a walled and moated royal city and was the last capital of the Angkorian empire. The Angkor area was supposed to have been the biggest city area in the world in the 12th century with over a million inhabitants. Final stop was the temple of Ta Phrom which has remained more or less untouched and not restored. It was also the set for the film Tomb Raider (Lara Croft) and it was fascinating to see the silk cotton trees growing through the walls.
Unfortunately the traffic was so bad we had to postpone our sunset boat ride until tomorrow. Hopefully the Chinese will have finished celebrating New Year and Cambodians gone back to work.
After a much needed shower it was off by tuk tuk to Pub Street. Amazing street of bars and restaurants and great vibe if not a little noisy and very busy. Just got in a happy hour drink, 50c beers before dinner.

Stunning A&G - clearly the '50 places to visit before you die' doesn't do it justice - lucky you... well apart from sleeping with G after 'Pub Street' but I guess you must be immune by now Aly...
