Big big Island

Hilo, Hawaii, United States
Since we live in Maui for a little while, we figured we won't be back to HI for some time, so for our vacation this year, we decide to check out all the islands we haven't been to. (besides the 2 you can't go to.) The Big Island being the first. We enjoyed the big island. We flew in to Kona and all you see is old lava rock everywhere. People take painted white rocks and spell things out and make designs with them. It was really neat and I wanted to do it too but couldn't find a place to get white rocks. They have stores that Maui doesn't. (Saw the glorious red circle and dot of target. Went in, just to be in a Target again -lol) Sight saw a bit. This place has 11 of the 13 climate zones of world. We found a few places to get raw food since it was the last week of our Raw Vegan diet but it was hard not eating out while on vacation. Went parasailing. Its always fun to do but for the money I wouldn't say it is something you need to do more than once. Drove to our Hotel to check in waaaayyy to Hilo. Had we thought about it, we should have gotten a hotel in Kona but oh well. It is a BIG island, like a 2 hr. drive across. That's why we get the economy rental car. Eh on the hotel, but not even close to the worst of what we've stayed in.

Back to Kona for our snorkel with the Manta Rays . That was super cool. They are huge and swim right up next to you. I was a little nervous but they have no interest in humans, no stinger, and no teeth. Plus, with all the commotion of 10 boats and divers, sharks don't even come near. Yay! Sad thing though, the cheep "water-proof" case for my flip camcorder proved it self to be not and it fried my flip mini hd. (Husband bought me a "waterproof" Kodak replacement one which got water in it the second it hit the ocean in Lanai so we just returned that and ebay-ed another flip which is on its way.) That upset me but I'll just have to invest more in underwater housing.

On the way back to Hilo we swing by the Volcano. It is dark, super windy, and cold but so worth seeing the orange glow at night. Next morning we check out the macadamia nut farm/factory which was neat and then to the Volcano Park to see things in the day. We also checked out more of Hilo, watched a movie, went to a farmers market, and explored. Back to the Volcano at night but HUGE let down, the sight to where lava flows into the ocean, (and my only chance to see actual lava) said they closed at 10pm but they lied!!! They closed at 8pm. Thanks d-bags - fix your sign so I we don't drive 20 miles out of the way to get there 30 min. too late. The last day we check out Kona and 2 coffee farms, the world's most scenic bathrooms, and get some local exotic fruit for lunch. This may be our favorite island. But maybe not. Nice place to check out anyways.
