Coober Pedy, South Australia, Australia
5/4/2015 - 6/4/2015 — 2 nights Opal Inn ($35 p/n)

Left Woomera about 9 .30am and saw our first living wildlife for the trip... 2 Emus running across the road then further up a massive Wedge Tailed Eagle chowing down on a piece of road kill and it made no effort to move so we needed to drive around the impressive beast... Should have taken a photo :(

Arrived at Coober Pedy around 2:00pm and booked into the Opal Inn Caravan Park. Hung out at the van for a couple of hours then took short wander around town then popped into the local for a couple of drinks.

In the morning we headed off to The Breakaways which are 33kms North of Coober Pedy. We had met a couple in Woomera who told us not to bother going out there. So glad we did!

The Breakaways is more than 100 million years in the making and got its name because when seen from a distance it looks like it has broken away from the Stuart Ranges. Apparently the temperature can reach up to 45º with a ground temp of 65º, however it was bloody cold and very windy on our visit .

Kind of felt a little bit insignificant out here...

We saw a guy riding a recumbent bike out here... wasn't really up for a chat so we have no idea how far he had come or how far he had to go, although was carrying 2 x 20 litre jerrycans of water.

Next stop was at the rock formations called the Two Dogs, or Salt and Pepper. Several film crews have shot here including Mad Max 3: Beyond Thunderdome and Pricilla Queen of the Desert.

We then followed the famous Dog Fence for around 10kms. The Dog Fence was built in the 1880's and is the longest fence in the world spanning 5,300kms crossing three states.

From there we headed to the Opal Mine Museum which is underground (well actually dug out into a hill), and finally one of the underground churches.

Things learnt...
1. Don't take everything you are told as gospel... Their experience is not yours.
2. Don't let your hubby purchase ANYTHING from the service station. 1 bag of Allens mixed lollies = $15... WTF :(
