Uluru and The Olgas

Yulara, Northern Territory, Australia
8/4/2015 - 10/4/2015 — 3 nights

Hit the road about 9 .30am. We wondered how long it would be before we got a glimpse of Uluru... False alarm at 140kms out... Ummm that would be Mt Conner not The Rock (such tourists).

Arrived at Ayers Rock Resort around 12.30 and set up camp for the next 3 nights. This place is a hub of activity boasting a few different accommodation facilities from backpackers to up market, restaurants, bars, post office, spa, supermarket, Police and Fire Stations. Surprisingly the supermarket prices weren't as bad as we thought they would be, but we were told it was around $36 for a six pack of beer from the local bottle shop... WTF!

Early to bed and up early to Uluru for sunrise. Watched the sun come up then headed to the base for a free Ranger guided walk. Unfortunately we left the Ranger and 50 other tourists to it about 15 minutes in as it was just too damn cold to stand still! It's a 10.6km walk around the base and took us around 2hrs. Back to camp and jumped back into bed for a nana nap!

Rode around the park on our pushies for a while and decided a lay by the pool was in order ... no swimming here, the water temperature was minus 10!

BBQ dinner and a chat with our neighbours then off to bed.

Another early start, wanting to catch the sunrise over The Olgas (Kata Tjuta), then a walk through Walpa Gorge at The Olgas... again another cold morning and the wind chill was freezing, however I did dress more appropriately today... Mark not so much!

We packed up the BBQ and went to have dinner watching the sunset over Uluru.

Have met lots of lovely fellow travelers so far... (this is more for my record)
Gerry and Sue - Townsville (Coober Pedy)
Darren and Tanja, Macey and Kade - Langwarren (actually met these guys at our previous stop at Erldunda
Ron and Jan - Essendon
Andrew and Denise - Mill Park
Rob and Maree - inland from Newcastle
and how could we forget Graham from Woomera (the park pest and Mr Negative) he was the first person we met and we cringed to think that all travellers were like him... thankfully not!
