Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, Australia
13/7/2015 - 17/8/2015 - 5 nights Prospector Holiday Park ($35 p/n)

We bid farewell to Wes, Suzy and Shane around 8 .30am and headed East for the first time.

It was a long drive across the Eastern Hwy and we arrived in Kalgoorlie around 5.00pm.

We were looking forward to catching up with Andrea and Joe and they popped over that evening bearing gifts…

I had asked Kim to send us over some warmer clothes as we were going to the races on Sunday and had nothing appropriate to wear. Apart from some shoes and a shirt for Mark she needn't have bothered (sorry Kimba) as the weather for the next 4 days was picture perfect… 25+ degrees each day. Apparently the week before had been freezing!

The following day we walked the beautiful main St of Kalgoorlie, taking in all the amazing architecture and visited the museum. This was the first town in our entire trip that looked like what we expected it to! However, we didn’t expect there to be so many pubs (about 25 in the Kalgoorlie-Boulder area) ... not that that’s a bad thing!

Friday night we had drinks and a lovely dinner at Andrea and Joe’s with his family… Fun night with great people!

Saturday we were booked into tour the KCGM Super Pit, which is the biggest open pit gold mine in Australia. The Super Pit is 3.5kms long, 1.5kms wide and more than 600 metres deep. Talk about feeling insignificant amongst all the massive trucks and equipment.

After the tour we dropped into the York Hotel for a quick drink then headed off to The Beaten Track Brewery for a taste of the local brews… Quiet dinner and early to bed ready for the races the following day.

We had a delicious cooked breakfast Sunday morning (thanks Joe) then got to the races just before the first race. It was a very pleasant 28º and the champers was going down a treat… Just as well as we had a terrible day on the punt.

Joe’s horse Rafferty was running in the fifth and we were all very excited when we thought he had won… unfortunately it was a photo finish and Rafferty had been pipped at the post.

We finished off with drinks downstairs then went out for dinner and ended up back at the van for a nightcap!

Monday was a quiet recovery day then I cooked a farewell dinner for Andrea and Joe in van… talk about not so squeezy!

We really enjoyed Kalgoorlie… such a pretty town and even better that we had such great company.

Thanks for looking after us Andrea and Joe, we had an absolute awesome time in your gorgeous town… and you spoilt us rotten!
