Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport, Île-de-France, France
Well, we've made it to Paris. By my calculation, we're just over a third of the way there. Or, to put it another way, the short flight is down; the long one is still to come.
This is just a super quick layover update from the airport to let you know we're safe, sound, a bit tired, but still standing. The flight last night was only about a half hour behind schedule. It was full of coughing maskless people and -- as is typical for my luck -- a baby that wouldn't stop screaming. But it was otherwise uneventful. They even served us a yogurt drink for breakfast, which is super convenient when you're consuming all your calories through a straw.
Oh, and when we landed? There's no snow on the ground here. After all that.
Now we're in CDG, which is far from my favourite airport to transit in, but I seem to come through here a lot. We went through the second security check with plenty of time to spare, and browsed the shops a bit. Ryan's never actually been to Paris proper, but he did find the Eiffel Tower... next to a duty free whiskey display. Erm, close enough.
And, since we're transiting during COVID, I also did my research and found out about a rumoured outdoor area accessible to transit passengers without having to go through customs and actually leave the airport. It's a small garden patio right near our departure gate. The catch is, it's a smoking area. Which I usually avoid like the plague. But now it's a great way to get a chance to remove masks a bit for fresh air and some food and water, all while hopefully avoid catching the plague. Oh, the irony.
Anyway, we hung out on the outdoor deck for a bit and shared a sandwich and a bottle of water, all while avoiding the other smokers and probably getting some strange looks for why we were out there. Strange looks seems to be the name of this game so far. I only hope all these measures we're taking are enough to keep us safe on this very long journey. When we got too cold, we went back into the terminal, and now we're hanging out on these comfy lounge-style chairs and trying very hard not to fall asleep and miss our boarding call. I need a nap, badly.
The next flight's the long one, taking us all the way to Bangkok. Since it's currently 4am home time, I'm hoping that we'll both be tired enough to get some uncomfortable airplane sleep. Next update, hopefully from Bangkok.
