New Years Eve in Bangkok

Bangkok, Thailand
We woke up late with no real agenda other than to go check out the 'Grand Palace' and perhaps the Temple of Dawn and walk up it's many steps.

Whenever we have hot-water capability in the room we still drink our coconut white coffee from Penang . Still awesome. We got dressed and wandered up our alley looking for an American breakfast (eggs) because that's what Ree wanted.

Nice shot of a tuk-tuk behind her, which is timely because after our American breakfast we snagged one of those to the pier.

When we sat and had our breakfast the waitress had to pull over another table to hold all of the food.

So, as I mentioned, after eating as much of this breakfast as we could and wrapping the meat in a napkin for the dogs, we wandered up the alley and snagged a tuk tuk to the pier. I'm terrible at negotiating with them because when they say 200 Baht and I know that's high, I just don't feel like I can argue over a $6 extremely fun ride all the way across Bangkok.

We purchased our ferry tickets, waited for our ferry and rode it up the way to the Grand Palace stop #9.

When we disembarked the ferry we had to walk around the
walled palace . There were some interesting examples of the breakfast we could have had and an ever-increasing crowd-level as we got closer to the entrance. Ultimately arriving at the palace, our careful wardrobe planning hit a fail because Rhiannon's long pants were actually leggings. So it was off to borrow a skirt. Isn't she adorable in it?

We entertained ourselves in the palace complex, visiting two museums and the palace and the temple. It was crowded like an ill-conceived and mis-managed theme park and it was an unbelievably hot day - especially with as much as we have to cover up in order not to offend. We agreed that it was all worth it, though - an amazing place. The museums were interesting and the palace is beautiful.

A really fun thing that we saw, not pictured, was the changing of the guard at the palace entrance.

After much debate over how we might spend New Year's Eve, including Rhiannon had an opportunity to meet up with an old friend . But everything seemed a little hard and scary and plus we were so hot and tired after the day overdressed at the palace. At one point Rhiannon made the remark "I wish there was something we could do that is cool and you do it sitting down."

So we settled on Jan's recommendation that we visit the Siam Paragon and see a movie on their Blue Ribbon Screen. This includes a big easy chair with a pillow and blanket. Wonderfully enough Hobbit 3 was playing.

We took public transportation to Sukhumvit and a tuk tuk to our hotel. Safely in the room for the countdown.
