So we're driving into the Wilsons Promontory national park* and I'm starting to feel an increasing sense of doom. I should have seen it coming really. After all, David had been throwing that word 'walks' around lately. And I know my husband. But I've only just seen the hills!
I hesitantly ask David: So what is it I'm going to enjoy about the next few days exactly? Well, we're going to camp right near the beach, he told me; and there should be plenty of opportunities to get close to the local wild life
. And there are lots of Caroline-friendly short walks.
So I started to relax.
Then he added: But I won't lie, this is really for me. You're treat is the next stop**.
Still ...You really can experience a sense of calm when you accept that it's not always all about you; it's sometimes about him.
Then, David dragged me up every hill in sight!
I'm sure if David was writing this blog he'd tell you all about the amazing views, stunning rock formations and the sense of personal achievement at pushing ones own body... I seem to have blocked it all out. I must still be in shock. All I remember is watching The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty***, at the parks open-air cinema, and ... wait for it...seeing my first wombat!
We've finally got our Aussie creatures-in-the-wild Bingo: kangaroos, koalas, echidnas, possums, dingos, platypuses and wombats****!! And its not just been one-off sightings; we're seeing them in bucket loads
. This evening, the wombats are rivalling our kangaroo and koala encounters; I almost tripped over one, on my way to the showers, there are so many of these rotund little marsupials trundling around and grazing (like rabbits) in the dusk.
*Victoria's largest coastal wilderness area is in Wilsons Promontory National Park. Affectionately known as 'The Prom', it is one of the state's best loved parks – and with good reason. This 50,000 hectare reserve is threaded with a labyrinth of walking tracks that showcase all manner of magical realms sheltering abundant wildlife.
**Look out for my next blog about the Peninsula Hot Springs :)
***Top tip: if you're considering going traveling, but perhaps aren't entirely sure, watch this film! It will inspire you. We were in awe... And we're already travelling. Oh, and if you're not sure who to travel with, try Gum Tree; we got chatting to some travellers who connected there and are now sharing a car.
****Of course, there are plenty of other native animals but these, in my mind, are the iconic ones.
