Despite a painful drive, of seemingly never-ending bends -- all to visit a couple of caves, which, on arrival, were deemed too expensive for us to explore after all -- we ended up being rather enchanted by our trip inland to Buchan:
Chilling out
Unwilling to let wet weather rain-on-our-parade, we donned cossies and headed for a bracing dip in the cave's spring-fed swimming baths
. It really was just the ticket to cool off (...others may say it was slightly overkill) after a long and humid day. Seriously though, it was so cold that I now understand the phenomenon of 'phantom pains', and truly sympathise with the male sex.
Animal encounters
The rain continued into the night. So we hunkered down, huddled over our camp stove, in a little shelter only to find we were not alone... Looking down at us from the rafters was a rather hungry looking Possum. Mildly surprised at first, David -- who's never encountered a Possum before -- quickly started working out how to defend himself, and his dinner, with only a plastic plate to hand.
Putting the traumatic experience of the night before behind us, early the next morning we set off into the bush on one of the caves' suggested scenic trails. Within minutes of leaving the camp site, we found ourselves intruding on a family of Kangaroos having breakfast. After ten minutes of stalking them, trying to get a good photo, we left them in peace (or rather, they buggered off) and continued on our way
...Only to stumble on more groups of Kangaroos every few meters! I think I counted thirty in total; my particular favourite being, what looked to be, an Alpha-male who stared us down while his family made a quick getaway -- giving them a good head start, before nonchalantly hopping away himself.
