Did you know that off-shore rock stacks are home to ninja pigmy koalas? No, neither did I!
Today's drive involved quite a few rock stacks, some rock pillars later in the day, and a light sprinkling of rocks in between
.
Don't get me wrong, this stretch of coast has been nothing but dramatic. From Princetown to Peterbrough, the sheer cliffs, deep caverns, grottos, blowholes and off-shore rock stacks are to be marvel at: the Twelve Apostles, undoubtably the most photographed icon on the Great Ocean Road; Loch Ard Gorge, named after the ill-fated clipper wrecked here in 1848, complete with impossible survivor story; the Bay of Islands, ancient limestone pillars standing tall in the ocean...
... But my enthusiasm has been somewhat dampened by the fact that it bucketed-it-down on us, all day. Add some offshore high winds and you get the picture (or you can just look at the pictures and see!).
I've got to admit though, David's improvised stories -- or as I used to call them, 'mouth stories' -- about a tribe of ninja pigmy koalas who'd made their home on one of the green-topped rock stacks brightened the day
. And what clever little koalas they were: with eucalyptus leaves scarce, they survived by learning the art of spear fishing! Apparently echidna spines make great harpoons. (David will accept bids for publishing rights in comments bellow)
Throwing caution to the wind, and fully embracing the child within, we did manage to get out of the rain for a bit by jumping some railings (ignoring the reproachful looks from a couple of senior citizens...bet they were just jealous) to go explore a beach cave. In truth, we just swapped one kind of wet for another: we found ourselves gleefully dodging waves that swept in through the cave, finding us whichever fork we hid in.
But fun and frolicking aside, we were so thankful to find out our campsite tonight had some amazing inside spaces -- kitchen, dining room and a large lounge with a big TV -- where we could hide from the weather. We opted to just watch the kids braving the rain to bounce on the giant inflatable pillow (seriously, size of a tennis court!). Apparently, being a big-kid-at-heart only lasts until about 6 o'clock when it's wet.
