It never ceases to amaze me how David and I manage to find afternoon tea wherever we go.

Yesterday, after a surprisingly cool and peaceful morning spent in the gardens around Humayun's Tomb* -- where we retreated to from the hussle and bustle of Paharganj -- we went for tea at Cafe Turtle . This boho cafe ticks all the boxes really: surprisingly good cake and a calm place to read a book. It shouldn't have been that unexpected though, as to get there we had to walk through a gated housing estate full of posh cars, which i can only assume is home to the few Indian middle class.

Today, we went for high tea at The Imperial -- possibly the most refined way to while away an afternoon in Dehli. 'Opulent' doesn't really do the hotel justice. Entering through a pristine, palm-lined boulevard, we were bowed in by at least six members of staff before being shown into the lofty atrium -- the extremely attentive maitradee made sure our cups never reached empty, while we helped ourselves to as many treats as we could eat.

It felt quite sereal sipping tea from bone china cups and plucking dainty sandwiches and cakes from teired stands, while just outside chaotic city life surged on.

*Humayun's Tomb: a haunt for young couples openly engaging in public displays of affection (PDAs), otherwise frowned upon in India. I can't even hold David's hand in public! I think that is the biggest challenge for me... Although as we deduced today, I can hold his wrist, which avoids left and right hands touching -- your left hand is your toilet hand.
