Tallinn, Estonia

Today after our breakfast we booked the taxi for the Lux bus stop, going to Tallinn. The lux bus was very comfortable with chargers, Wi-Fi, free tea and coffee, it took 4 ½ hrs but the time passed quickly as we were playing games and I also read the news. I had booked the Lux bus from London and brought the printout of the tickets which was very convenient.

We took a taxi to My City Hotel in old town from the Tallinn Bus stop, after our swift check in at my city hotel we walked to St. Nicholas' Church just about 2 mins from our hotel.
St. Nicholas' Church is a medieval former church, built in the 13th century and is dedicated to Saint Nicholas, the patron of the fishermen and sailors. It has since been restored after Soviet bombing of Tallinn in the Second World War.

St. Nicholas' Church is now used as a museum and concert hall, where the collection of medieval art of the Art Museum of Estonia is displayed, the church is also a very popular concert hall due to its excellent acoustics.

     Toompea Hills for awesome views

We then walked up the hill for 20 mins through the cobbled streets in the snow to the Kohtuotsa, Patkuli viewing platforms on the Toompoe hills for the birds eye views of Tallinn. We viewed it from all the 3 platforms bracing the strong winds but worth it for these views. The views were awesome with all the snow, a must if you visit Tallinn.

      The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral

On our way back we passed the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, a Russian Orthodox Church which is prominent on the Toompea with its elegant Russian architecture. It is difficult to miss this stunning church as it dominates the Tallinn skyline, inside the church is very grand with pretty images. Estonians hate the Church as it reminds them of the Russian past but the Parliament house which is opposite of the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is a probably a reminder that now Estonian`s are in charge.

           Town Square

Then we went to the town centre where there was a Christmas market in the town square with lots of traditional stores, beautiful buildings, the night market was buzzing with mainly locals, few tourists it was really lovely here, very Christmassy with all the Christmas decorations and the snow, made it very picturesque.

            Olde Hansa

Our next stop was Olde Hansa with its Medieval Theme which takes you back in time to Middle ages, the waiter's and waitress were dressed in medieval costumes, there was no electricity and the place was lit with candles to propel the diner back in history. With live action role playing, the waiter was calling the couple seating on next table to us, My lord and My lady and the amazing crockery matching the medieval times gave it a genuine historical feeling. We had mulled wine in this tremendous atmosphere.; this is place to go if you want to try something different, it's pretty cool here.

We went for dinner at xx Sajand just opposite the information centre, the food was tasty, cocktails a delight, the staff very friendly and they had big Tv showing cartoons which was enjoyable. We walked back to our hotel which was only 5 mins away; my daughter had temperature so I settled her in bed.

Hi...this is a bit weird but I came across your blog while searching for Tallinn info :) I'm headed there at the same time this year and I have a really dumb Australian question- what sort of shoes do i need? Would normal leather boots be fine or do i need to invest in waterproof ones? My cousin seems to think slush can be an issue in December. What about fur lining?

Hi Joanna,
I just took normal Nike trainers but I wore two socks, one was thick lined and I was fine but it was very cold so do bring very warm cloths and comfortable shoes. I wore layers which helped a lot, also hat and scarf. Of course if you do have fur lined shoes then it will be better as I saw Estonian wearing them.
I hope you will have wonderful time. cheers
