Relaxing Day in a Small Island

Saipan, Northern Mariana Isl.
First, an FYI. I've been throwing around the name "Global." That's the company Suka works for, Global Trader's, Inc. Yes, I know the apostrophe is in the wrong place. I didn't name it.

Last night's Hash was a lot of fun . Suka is adorable on the Hash. And she's pretty good at it, too. It was a nostalgic run for me. It started at a landmark I noticed on my first trip out here. I knew where it was and Dave didn't. How's that for strange! Also, major parts of the trail were along the Laderan-Tangke trail, which was the site of the first significant hike I took on Saipan with Dave and the kids back in March or April. We ended up at Paupau Beach for five kinds of great homebrewed beer and German sausage with sauerkraut. I won a bottle of the beer to take with me based on a good and complimentary speech to the hares.

After the Hash, we introduced Suka to Hamilton's. Hamilton's is a bar originally owned by the first administrator of the island after he retired. Today it's operated by his son-in-law, Rick. I see Rick's wife and children in Java Joe's frequently. The older child goes to one of the local private schools now that she's of high school age, but Ruby still home schools the younger one. We originally bonded over my therapeutic silly putty .

Today was pretty relaxed. We didn't set an alarm. When we did get up, I walked over to the grocery store for some missing ingredients and made an American breakfast for Suka. It was her first time having french toast. We had that, bacon, and eggs fried in bacon grease.

After lounging around for a bit more, we went to a gathering with the Java Joe's staff at the apartment swimming pool of Rick, the ex-owner. After that we saw a movie ("30 Days of Night") and got Thai food for dinner.

Now for the "small island" part. Remember from the March-May trip how I met a guy who was on the island to bring wind power? Well, guess who was at the Thai restaurant? He leaves next Sunday. While he was gone, they passed his legislation, so they're moving forward. I won't get into all the politics of it, but it's pretty interesting. Just imagine all the forces at play to cause obstacles for dropping the price of power from $.28/KwH to $.12. We went over to PIC and met him for a drink after we were done with dinner.

Overall, a nice, relaxing day.
