Rocks, Rocks, and More Rocks

Saipan, Northern Mariana Isl.
This time, I'll set the map pin at Suicide Cliff. Why? Because that's where I've spent much of the last 24 hours. No, I didn't sleep there. But I've spent 10 hours or so rock climbing there in the last day.

Sunday afternoon Suka and I met Alan (Hasher, Assistant Attorney General), Stephanie (his girlfriend, French, pediatrician), Ken (dentist, I think), several teachers at local schools, mostly the Seventh Day Adventist Academy (SDA), and a couple of others at Suicide Cliff at 3:30. We waited out some rain in the car, so we didn't start setting the ropes until about 4:30. By the time we got the ropes set and gave instruction to the new and lightly experienced climbers, there was only time for a few climbs before dark. I didn't go up on a rope, but I lowered on one and free-climbed up a reasonably safe spot in the dark. We decided that since most of the island has Veterans' Day off, we would leave up most of the anchors, only remove the ropes, and come back the next morning.

Monday morning I brought Dave. Suka had to work. There were a couple of no-shows from the day before. This time I got to climb a bit. I attempted the advanced rope, but had to abandon it. The place that I started was really difficult and I forgot to bring my finger supports, so I didn't want to push it. In fact, while climbing back down from where I got to, I slipped. The rope caught me, but I fell backwards into a tree. The tree lost a branch and I have a nice raspberry on the back of my thigh.

It was a lot of fun and good exercise. Even not climbing the ropes that much, I did a lot of scrambling around helping people, belaying, and setting up the ropes. Monday's climbing last longer than I anticipated, so I ended up late for lunch and just decided to make it my own observance of Veterans' Day instead of working.
