Baking on the deck

Belem, State of Para, Brazil
In the morning, I met another foreigner from turkey. We were going the same way, to alter do chao, so we planned to go together.

Most of the day, I stayed on the top deck, enjoying the sun and following the shade from the mast as the boat turned and the sun crossed the sky . By the end of it I was a bright red cherry, despite constant applying and reapplying my sunscreen. The sun was very strong.

People were killing time in various interesting ways. Some threw small bundles of clothes and food to local fishermen who paddled up to the side of the boat. Others were playing shuffleboard or a crude version of curling with their flip flops. Some older ladies set up a craft table, making bead decorations for their havaianas. Some drunk people played dominoes and cards and others danced to the annoyingly loud Brazilian top 40 which permeates the entire ship.

At night, we took a mattress up and watched as the countless stars slid by, to the sound of a quiet acoustic guitar.
