Autumn in Autun.......

Migennes, Bourgogne, France
We awoke to a clear bright but chilly morning, with mist just lifting off the lake.
We got everything ready to move off and then set off to walk into Autun.   From what we had seen the night before, Autun was an affluent city, with lots of Roman and Medieval remains.
The Roman Theatre was once the biggest in Gaul and could seat up to 25,000.     it has not been renovated, but left au naturel. There is no entrance charge and you can wander around it at will.    There are two original Roman gates, one of which is a bit like a smaller version of the Porta Nigra in Trier.
The cathedral was built in the 12thC and is most famous for its beautifully carved capitals on the pillars in the nave and the Tympanum depicting the Last Judgement over one of the doors.

We liked Autun very much. it has a lovely 'feel' to it. The old streets are narrow and windy with something different around each corner.
Even downhill in the more modern commercial part felt right.   We were lucky in that Friday is market day and the main square was busy and buzzing, with French women filling their big wicker baskets.
The flowers were beautiful, especially the chrysanthemums, which the French grow in pots like cushions with no greenery showing.
We were sad to leave but time is pressing and we have to make our way north, so after buying our baguette for lunch, we moved on.

We travelled via Avallon and Auxerre, but didn't see much of either as we were directed to the ring roads, far away from the towns.
