Good vibes in Viborg

Ribe, Jutland, Denmark
We were going to spend 2 nights at this campsite, but decided to drive into Viborg and then move on from there.   The Viborg festival, march and half marathon were due to be held at the weekend, but we were able to find free flat parking for the MH on the outskirts.
There was a Viking settlement in Viborg in 800 and it was one of the 3 great assembly places in Denmark

To get to the centre we walked through the local Cemetery.   It was a very different and beautiful place. Each grave or family plot was surrounded by a low box hedge.  There were lots of small conifer trees and it all gave the impression of lots of individual gardens - all very well kept.
In the cathedral square preparations were being made for a concert.

The cathedral was described as the largest granite built church in the world. As I come from a long line of granite quarry workers and stone masons I would question that. In fact it was rebuilt in 1871 in red brick to replace one destroyed by fire in 1726 and FACED in granite.
There was great controversy about the re-building and it took 2 or 3 attempts.   The present church is a 'romantic impression' of what the builders thought a mediaeval church would have looked like.

In 1900 a painter called Skovgaard started to paint frescoes of biblical stories on the interior walls and finally finished in 1913. The results are amazing. The painting is quite naive in style but suits the style of the church.

After visiting the cathedral we went for a wander around the attractive town.

We then moved on further into Denmark to the historic town of Ribe
