A poignant walk around Ypres.

Ypres, West Flanders, Belgium
Our first foray into Ypres was to do a big shop.  Our cupboards were nearly bare and we had been having some very 'creative' meals, using up what we had available without 'going shopping' .It was good to shop in euros again.
Our campsite was very conveniently situated, so after lunch, in baking heat we walked - in the shade- along the ramparts into town.
We were annoyed with ourselves, because although we had sort of planned to end our trip with a visit to Ypres (we say this every year!) we had forgotten to pack our Holt's Guide to the Ypres Salient.   The TO was not that helpful with info and guides.
We thought that there would not be so many school trips at the weekend but the town was very busy.  There was to be a Reggae festival that night and a big marquee was set up outside the Cloth Hall for a food festival on the Sunday - this messed up the photo opportunities a bit!

Rob's Gt Uncle - Ernest Skinner - has his name on the Menin Gate. He was killed in May 1915 during the 2nd Battle of Ypres.   Apparently he was buried nr the battlefield, but the graves were lost during future battles.
We bought a small wooden cross to place near his name and were pleased that we were asked to put the money in a British Legion collecting box.
We found his name and planned to return for the Last Post ceremony on Sunday night.
