A little bit of retail therapy!

Watten, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France
After our pleasant sojourn in Cassel we moved on to the Aire at Watten.   However we got there via the Centre Commercial between Arques and St Omer!
We needed some shopping - wine and beer? - so made good use of the huge Auchan here.
They just happened to have a big sale on in the women's dept and I just had to buy various items reduced by 70% - well, it would have been rude not to, wouldn't it?!!!

We found the MH aire at Watten, right beside the Bourgourg Canal. We could sit in the MH and watch enormous barges going by.  Behind the aire is a smaller branch of the canal with cabin cruisers moored.
We needed water so had to go to the Calypso Bar in the town to get a token.  The bord is very new, clean and modern.   A 2e token gives 10mins of water and 50mins of eletcricity.

We had a wander around the very ordinary little town.  A sign by the churchyard says there is a CWG there but we could not find it. The graveyard was very full, with enormous polished stone family graves.   We noticed that quite a few had a name and birth date inscribed, but no date of death.   Very advanced future planning?!
In the windows of the Town Hall there were lots of photo's of how the town looked in the 19th C.
It looks as though the Canal was much busier then than it is now.
Some of the bridges were destroyed by the Germans in WW11, rebuilt and then strategically blown up again by the Allies!
The aire at Watten is supposed to take 8 or more MH's but when we were there it was full with 6 and several turned away. When we woke up there was a Dutch MH parked in the pump out area. Strangely we were the only Brits there so it is not just used for getting to the ferries.

We stayed at Watten as we wanted to try out a few aires near the channel.   Our favourite at Bergues has no facilities other than parking, but is rarely full and can take at least 30 or more units.
