A wonderful day in 'the Big Pomegranate'

Granada, Andalusia, Spain and Canary Islands
The long range forecast for today was for the best day so far, and so it was - warm dry and sunny.
We caught the bus into Granada from right outside the campsite. It was an immaculate, brand new bus and the journey cost 3.40e each return for a 45 min journey! The bus even stopped in the middle of the city and not at the bus station which is a long way out.
We visited the Alhambra 19 yrs ago, (As Amy reminded us - a wonderful cultural experience for a 15yr old - NOT !!!)  but had never been into the city.
We had a fantastic day, the temp rose to 70 deg. and the atmosphere was wonderful.
The highlight for us was our visit to the Capilla Reale where the Catholic Monarchs Isabella and Fernando are buried. They had an enormous affect on Spain, including the Inquisition, the expulsion of the Jews and they funded Columbus, and drove the Muslims out of their last stronghold of Granada ! Their 4 children were married into different European dynasties including England.   There was a High Mass in progress in the Capilla in the morning, so when we went back and queued for the 3.30pm opening, we were among the lucky first few in the queue to be given free tickets!!
The King of Aragon and the Queen of Castille have a beautiful marble tomb and below in a crypt their bodies lie in lead coffins.
In an adjoining museum are their ceremonial gowns , Fernando's sword and Isabella's crown. She died in 1504 and he died in 1516 Fernando annexed Navarra in 1512 and brought all of Spain under one rule for the first time since the Visigoth days.
Unfortunately, this is such an important place to the Spanish that you are not permitted to take any photographs at all. I will photograph the postcards I bought and include them later.

I will let the photos tell the story of our wonderful day.

Just to explain the title of this entry.  Granada is Spanish for 'pomegranate' - so Granada is the 'big pomegranate'!!

It took us 19 years to actually visit the city, but we're glad we did. Thanks for your comment, Cheryl
