Day 3: Rita's House

Saturday, September 19, 2015
Mühldorf, Bavaria, Germany
The day started off good with me going to the local bread market and getting fresh rolls and sliced bread. The lady behind the counter thought I was from England. I guess my German accent sounded British. After getting bread I went to the other local market and got sliced meats and cheese. I then returned to Manu's apartment and found Manu had already been to the local market and gotten bread and meats, but she didn't get the dark sliced bread I got, so we combined our shopping into one big breakfast.
After breakfast Miah said her right eye was swollen a little and hurt, So Hans (Manu's boyfriend the eye doctor) stopped by for a personal diagnosis .. good to have an eye doctor around. He said she had sub-surface stye... but it is hard to translate. A stye that doesn't come to the surface. Manu had some eye ointment to treat this, so Miah will put this in her eye twice a day.
We just hung around the apartment until the official Octoberfest keg was tapped. We watched this live on TV and I took some pictures of it happening. We will be going to the Octoberfest for a little tomorrow and or watching the parade, then to Ade's girlfriend Gitti's for a cookout.
I dressed in my lederhosen for the tapping of the keg and drank a beer in honor of the opening of the 2015 Octoberfest ( nicknamed Wiesen ). After watching the ceremonies and people celebrating Octoberfest we loaded up in two cars and headed to Rita's for a party.
It took about an hour to drive to Muhldorf. Rita greeted us all like family and invited us out to her lawn for coffee and desert. I had a cappucino and the rest had espresso and many other kinds of coffee. Rita served us home made plum cobbler with ice cream and when that was done she served us home made walnut pie. I guess it is best to get dessert out of the way before dinner and beverages.   Rita's lawn looks like a scene out of Alice in Wonderland and I had Miah lay down on the bed in her lawn to look like sleeping beauty.
After desert settled in it was time for beer and wine. It was at this time that Rita's brother Frank, his wife Angela and their daughter Victoria joined us . They have been to America 13 times and visited 40 out of 50 states. Dang they have seen more of America than me! I started off the afternoon with one of my favorite beers, Erdinger Dark and Rita poured it into a special frosted Erdinger glass for me to take home. to say that Rita was an exceptional host is an extreme understatement. Tom said he will never forget this evening. Everytime someone was low on a beverage, Rita was right there to ask what they wanted to try next. I can't speak for the rest of our group as they were getting beers, schnapps, wine and water so I will let you know what I had.
I had an Erdinger Dark beer, Erdinger light beer, Erdinger white beer, Special Erdinger beer ( can't remember the name), Augustiner beer, Local brewery beer, Schnapps, another 2 Erdinger white beers. Throughout this time Rita served dinner, Leberkase ( which translates to liver cheese, but has no liver or cheese...don't ask me to explain) It tasted like a fluffy ham or bologna, along with potato salad and pretzels.
As darkness settled in Rita's husband Fritz came home and that is how I ended up with my 2 last beers. I couldn't turn down the host! Frank made the fire pit and we all sat around talking, laughing and finishing our drinks.
It was another great evening being treated like royalty. Many thanks to Manu, Hans, Rita, Fritz, Frank, Angela and Victoria for making this day and night so special.
I will leave you all with this teaser....... we might be headed to Italy for a one night stay over on Sept 22!!
