Even though last night was a late night for me, I felt fine this morning. We checked out by 9 and Blaibach was only 10 minutes away. My cousin Richard drove us to Manfred's from our hotel in 2013 and I could only remember a little way into town. I called Manfred and he drove to guide us the rest of the way. He only live a few blocks away, but the streets climb, turn and can be confusing.
I'm always impressed with his house and how he built it himself
. Nothing ever seems out of place. We were warmly greeted by Manfred and Seglinde. Before breakfast I gave Manfred a couple of family photos that I had blown up and glued to thin Styrofoam boards. One was of His father, mother, my mother ( his sister ), himself and his other brother who had died when he was 18. The other was of Maunfred and my mother on one of her trips to Germany. For breakfast we had coffee, mimosa, sliced meats, breads and a soft poach. My mother used to make my brother and I soft poached eggs when we were growing up and it was very good.Manfred also gave me a Bavarian Mug he had bought for me. I will add it to a special place in my Germany room back in Jacksonville.
After Breakfast Manfred showed us all around his house and back property. Tom and I had a challenge to see who could stand in the cold stream water the longest and he won. It comes right down from the mountains and is always ice cold, even in summer. We looked around in the old house in the back of his property and walked up the hill to a small bench to take a picture of Manfred, Miah and Bonnie
. Manfred goes up here frequently to hand feed apples to the neighbors horses. As we got back to his house we all stood for group pictures. We then said our emotional goodbyes and I told him next time I would spend a few days visiting him instead of only a short time. I set the GPS for Richard's and off we went.
We only had to take a short detour on the way to Richard's and got there close to 2 pm. After bringing our luggage inside, Richard asked us if we wanted to a bike ride to a local place for some drinks and cake. Richard had gotten extra bikes from his neighbors. We all agreed it would be fun, but I thought it was a short ride.
It ended up winding through town, down back roads, over cobblestone patches and finally there after 4 miles. I had injured my left groin about a year ago from a 16 mile bike ride and now it is re-aggravated. The place is called Schloss Blumenthal and it is a large enclosed compound with many buildings. Apparently it is struggling to survive as Richard explained to us, but the beer was good and the pieces of cake were large. I didn't have any cake. On the way back I rode ahead to take pictures and when we arrived at Richard's a neighbor took a group picture of us.
For dinner Monica prepared a large white raddish ( 1 foot long ), sliced meats, cheeses, and breads. After dinner we sat around a firepit Richard had custom made for Monica. Some neighbors joined us and we talked for about an hour before heading to bed. It had been a long day and tomorrow we will visit Nordlingen. It is in the center of a meteorite crash and is completely surrounded by a wall that you can walk on.
