Day 10: Town of Nördlingen, Germany

Nördlingen, Bavaria, Germany
Today we drive an hour to visit the town of Nördlingen. It is one of only three towns in Germany that still have a completely established city wall. We had a special breakfast with Weiss Wurst, beer and bread. Tom Richard and me only had a half beer. We took two cars for the 9 of us. Richard drove the guys and Monica drove the girls. We found parking spaces right inside this small town and began our visit with a walk on the city wall. We walked completely around the city which is about 2 miles. We then headed into the city center where the main church is. There we will meet up with a tour guide that will speak in English.
We sat at a cafe near this church and had some juice, water and coffee as we will skip lunch and wait until dinner to eat . We met our guide around 2 pm and she is originally from Pennsylvania. She came to this town because of her husbands work in 1996 and never left. The tour will last about 90 min and only cover some of the cities main points of interest. We went to the city hall, two museums, the tanners district ( where leather was made ), a city entrance and a few other buildings of importance. She told us the story of why pigs are in high regard in this city. Legend goes someone wanted to rob the city and paid a city guard to leave one gate entrance unlocked. A pig found the gate unlocked and pushed it open and as he did this a woman was walking by and yelled to the city guard that the gate was open. the guard re-locked the gate and the city was saved by the pig! You will see many pigs around this city and a pig in Germany is a symbol of good luck. One of the most famous men that came from this city almost every American knows.. He immigrated to Chicago and started a hotdog company. His name was Oscar Mayer!! We ended the tour back at the church.
Everyone but Miah and Bonnie will be going up into the church to get a bird's eye view of the city. It was a lot of steps, but worth the climb as the view was awesome. Carlos took some pictures at the top, but then decided not to go around the outside because the church tower started to sway a little when the church bell rang. I counted the steps on the way down and there were 342!
We got back in our cars and drove to Hotel Braustuberl and Brewery for dinner. This is a very nice restaurant and coincidentally the last time and this time a wedding is going on when we arrive. This last time they were just taking pictures, but this time they are dancing and playing music. I peek in there room and I see someone dressed as a big pink bunny dancing around! We got seated in a rear room with a door to close so we are not disturbed by the music. I have ordered sliced beef with vegetables, potatoes and a dark beer.
This has been another long and good day in Germany. Tomorrow we will go to a place where you climb tree obstacles and zip line in harnesses.
