As we neared time to board our next plane, we decided to give little man a chance to walk around a bit. So we put his little backpack on him and emerged from the club. No sooner had we walked out into the hall but Asian tourists were snapping his photo like fan girls. (I can't deny he looks pretty adorable with his tiny backpack.) With a little encouragement he gave them high fives, which tickled them to no end. After he got to walk around a bit and ride on the conveyor belt/people mover things, we put him in his stroller and hoped that another loop around the airport would help him drift off to sleep for a much needed nap. Thankfully, Desmond fell asleep before we reached our gate.
He slept for the first few hours of our flight
. He slept through the hot towels, the hot mixed nuts, the drinks, the salad and entrée courses of dinner. I was fortunate enough to be able to eat one of the meals, rice and chicken with a curry sauce, and Bryan had some beef and potatoes with a gravy (that he insisted was more like a "pepper sauce") that smelled heavenly. When Desmond woke up the flight attendants served him dinner as well, cutting up chicken, potatoes and carrots for him. (Though they had Bryan come help them when he passed through to come back from the restroom - since they said they didn't have any children and weren't sure how to do it right). Desmond ate chicken and some roll just in time for lemon sorbet which he graciously shared with me.
Our crew were awesome on this flight. Helpful, personable, snarky and fun. They made our trip go much faster than it would have otherwise.
After dinner had concluded came lots of screen time. Desmond played a Duplo train game on the iPad for more than an hour while Bryan took a rest. Somewhere after that we all were ready to be off the plane but we were still more than an hour out. We let him sit in front of us on the floor to play with toys, we walked him up and down the aisles. He refused to use the tiny airplane toilet and held it all the way to Boston. We rallied after the warm cookie a bit and ended up enjoying a beautiful view on the descent into Boston
. The city lights below were accentuated by tiny flickers of light. As we flew ever closer we were able to see these were fireworks and enjoyed watching them all over the city.
Getting to the hotel was quick and easy via the shuttle. We checked in and were thrilled to find they already had the crib in our room. Not only that, but there is Johnson and Johnson bath wash for Desmond. That is a nice little amenity. We are on the fourteenth flour and have a spacious room. We are looking forward to exploring Boston tomorrow as neither of us have ever been here before.
For my FitBit friends: we got only 7,477 steps today.
*** Edited to add: So, it turns out my FibBit counts bumpy bus rides and turbulence on the plane as steps. No clue what an accurate count would have been, but definitely a lot less ***

So, at this point you may be saying to yourself "weren't they going to Europe?" We are, just by a rather circuitous route. One of the most expensive bits of traveling to Europe is the flight there. So, this time we are flying on miles. We used Mer's tuition payments to meet the spending requirements on some American Express Gold cards. They came with 50,000 points each, that we transferred to Air Canada.
Why Air Canada? Well, most airlines charge 10% of the fare for a lap infant, but they only charge 100 Canadian dollars. Not too bad. Also, because of airline partnerships we can use Air Canada miles to fly United to Boston and then Swiss Air to Zürich.
When I was looking for flights, I found lots of options to get to Europe from the east coast on miles, but not many options for getting across the USA to make the connection. So, by leaving from Seattle, connecting in San Fran, and staying a night in Boston we get to fly to Switzerland in Business/First class for about $200 after the fees. We even covered our night here in Boston using another credit card sign up. We get tomorrow to explore Boston as we don't fly out until evening. Kinda like a free bonus stop!

That was great reading. Reading your blog is way more interesting than the news, email, or words with friends!
